Passenger Power
Title:  Passenger Power
Description:  Because of an impending strike on Saturday 24 July 1971, the westbound SUNSET and the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT had been annulled at New Orleans the previous day, which resulted in this unusual opportunity to photograph the power from both trains together. Both trains arrived in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, but the Southern train left early the next morning while the SUNSET departed at noon; so normally a shot like this would not have been possible. On the right are former Union Pacific E9A 947 (later AMTK 424), UP E88 927B (AMTK 370) and Southern Pacific SDP45 3207; while on the left were Southern E8A units 6908 and 2925.

SOU E8A 2926
Title:  SOU E8A 2926
Description:  Southern E8A 2926 was on the SOUTHERN CRESCENT at Slidell, Louisiana. This unit was unusual because it retained its 2900-series number when it was repainted into the new green scheme. The railroad decided to renumber E8A units 2923-2929 as 6900-6905 and 6916 shortly after it adopted the green paint scheme, so almost all of the other 2900-series units came out of the paint shop with new numbers. The 2926 was renumbered 6903, and became New Jersey Department of Transportation 4333 after it was retired by the Southern in 1979. (approximate date of photo)

Southern Railfans
Title:  Southern Railfans
Description:  A couple of months before the Illinois Central–Gulf Mobile & Ohio merger a couple of railfbns from the south end of the GM&O (Jim Selzer from Slidell and Earl Hampton from New Orleans) headed north to document the railroad before it disappeared. Here, Jim Selzer was observing the engines at the railroad’s shop in Venice, Illinois. Of particular interest was the 950, which had been built as EMD SD40 prototype 434, on an SD35 frame. It was unique on the GM&O and had been purchased in July 1966 to replace wrecked GP35 614. The GM&O and the ICG may be gone, but the 950 lives at the Monticello Railway Museum as IC 6071.
