UP 2406 |
Description: |
UP (MP) train CH pauses in the Monroe yard on its way from Chicago to Houston. At that time, the route from Little Rock through Monroe and Alexandria was used as a alternate route to and from south Texas. In addition to UP C30-7 2406, the train also has yellow MP SD40-2 3298 and blue MP SD40 3063 -- a typical mix of power from that era. I don't know if a forward-facing locomotive was added before the train left! |

MP 2501 |
Description: |
This locomotive was orginally 601, and then 2501. Here it has been re-engined with a normally-aspirated 645 engine, making it essentially a GP38; but not renumbered. After the MP decided to put its re-engined GP35's into their own number series, it became the 2601. |

MP 3182 |
Description: |
A trio of MP SD40-2's prepares to take a transfer run from Race Street Yard -- along the Mississipppi River near downtown -- across the Mississippi River to Avondale Yard. Race Steet Yard was closed in early 1984, and the land was used as the primary parking lot for the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition. The track in the foreground, parallel to the train, belongs to the ICG. |

UP B23-7 4679 |
Description: |
Almost all of the Missouri Pacific's 85 B23-7's received 100-series Union Pacific numbers when they were relettered for the UP, but this unit retained its MP number until it became UP 179 in April 1986. The locomotive was on a set of transfer power in the New Orleans Public Belt's East Bridge Yard. |

NB MOPAC |
Description: |
A empty DEGX coal train rolls north along the Mississippi Export at Agricola, Mississippi; about half way between the railroad's end points of Pascagoula and Evanston. The train is crossing Mississippi Highway 613 and passing the Temple Baptist Church. Motive power is a quartet of Missouri Pacific SD40-2's: 6050, 6019, 6025 and 6006. Unlike most MP locomotives, all of these have dynamic brakes and were bought specifically for coal train service. The train is on its way from Mississippi Power's DANIEL ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT (thus the DEGX reporting marks on the cars) at Escatawpa to Colorado via the Mississippi Export-Evanston-Illinois Central Gulf-Memphis-Missouri Pacific-Pueblo-Rio Grande. |

MP 8003 |
Description: |
The Missouri Pacific only owned eight SW8's. They were built in 1952 as Texas & Pacific 811-818 and spent much of their lives in south Louisiana, where they were used in yard and branch line service. The units once wore oscillating headlights and were originally considered light road switchers. Between March 1979 and May 1981 the MP rebuilt all of them into SL1 slugs. The 8003 and 8000 were resting next to the former TPMPT (Texas Pacific-Missouiri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans) engine house at Avondale Yard. |
