CN 4715 |
Description: |
The 4715 has moved past the east side of the former Milwaukee Road depot on what used to be the main line from Milwaukee to Green Bay, and beyond. This track is now part of the small yard facility in Hilbert for sorting cars. Just beyond this string of hoppers is the junction with the Manitowoc Subdivision (formerly Soo Line) which is very close to a 90 degree diamond. This depot had it's windows replaced with more modern fixtures about 2003 or 2004. Sometime since then, they have been boarded up. |

The CN 4715 heads into the storage track to pick up another cut of covered hoppers in Hilbert. The unit's train is set on a connecting track from the Manitowoc Subdivision to the Plymouth Subdivision (both former Wisconsin Central designations). The train came from Neenah via the Manitowoc sub and connected with the Plymouth sub thru St. Paul switch. St. Paul switch is the point at which trackage rights Soo trains left Milwaukee Road rails between Menasha and Hilbert and went on eastward to Manitowoc. |

Once a common sight to those of us who live along the former Soo Line R.o.W. before they purchased the Milwaukee Road lines through Wisconsin, spotting an old "shock of wheat" hopper is like seeing an old friend. From Rockwood the R.o.W. is a recreation trail to Denamark, I believe. |

IC 3137 |
Description: |
After negotiating the tight curves through a residential area, the CN local working the Plymouth Sub pulls some cars from the Briess Malt and Ingredients facility in Chilton. The original parts of this malt house were built in 1901 as the Chilton Malting Co. The Briess web site has some very interesting reading about the company and it's history. |

Description: |
A Plymouth Sub turn enters the south end of Hilbert as it heads back toward Neenah. The train will negotiate St. Paul Switch in about a mile from this point and enter the Manitowoc Sub. On the Plymouth Sub, the CN trains operate on former Milwaukee Road right of way. Between Hilbert and Menasha, the CN is on former joint Milwaukee and Soo Line rails. |

IC 3137 |
Description: |
The Plymouth Sub local crosses County Highway BB (Calumet County) at Saint John on it's return to Neenah. The track through Saint John was originally laid by the Milwaukee and Northern from Hilbert to Neenah/Menasha. The Soo Line eventually shared the track to Hilbert Junction where it then continued on it's own track to Manitowoc. Saint John's Sacred Heart Church resides in the background. |

Description: |
After switching down in the small yard along Lake Michigan, a local job returns to the former CNW yard in Manitowoc. The crew must approach the grade crossing at S. 10th Street cautiously, as most people choose to ignore the warning signals, even pedestrians. |

GTW 4911 |
Description: |
Having passed through Saint Paul Switch and crossed Highway 32, a CN turn is entering Hilbert via Hilbert Jsnction. Hilbert Junction is where the old Milwaukee Road branched off to get to Menasha and the Fox Cities from its line that went to Ontonagon, Michigan, from Milwaukee. The Soo Line had rights over the Milwaukee from Menasha to Hilbert Junction where it th`n continued on it's own rails to Manitowoc. These lines are now all owned by the CN. |
