Title:  B&O C2629 in the Belt near Bennington
Description:  Photo September 1965. The coal docks are in full swing and the daily run has pulled down to Dock Jct., leaving the cab at the south end of dlass factory siding (visible behind the cab). The switch stand in the foreground is for the siding on the opposite side (NYC or cemetery side).

Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 1 of 2 - June 1966
Title:  Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 1 of 2 - June 1966
Description:  Single stack B&O 9411 (B&O class SE-3, according to the stenciling above the builder's plate) idles behind Romig's while the crew is at lunch. The NP boxcars are destined for Matthews & Fields on Stonewood. In the background, note the poplar trees that dot the property line between the cemetery and the NYC Charlotte branch, just a stone's throw on the other side of the engine. Poplars attract lighting strikes like no other (lots of water content), so they have become less desirable as border plantings.

Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 2 of 2 - June 1966
Title:  Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 2 of 2 - June 1966
Description:  Today, Romig's Tavern occupies the entire plaza building on Bennington. In the summer of 1966 however, Romig's had only one storefront out of many businesses in the plaza, located about in the middle. Other businesses at that time (they came and went over the years, of course) included a TV repair shop (where we picked up scrap TV parts for our model railroad needs), a liquor store, a barbershop, and (Mary) Creasy's Beauty Shoppe, the last located at the end of the building, right next to the tracks. The end of the plaza casts an afternoon shadow on C2602 while the crew is inside Romig's for lunch.

B&O 9610
Title:  B&O 9610
Description:  Exact date unknown. Probably summer 1966. This was a Saturday move, lighter than most. The crew has finished its Kodak work and is leaving for the day. In order, 9610, a single Matthews & Fields load (NP boxcar), the caboose, and a string of Kodak go-aways to be left on the main between McCall and the Ridge while the crew heads north. Remarkably, Wehner Mower is still a going concern 50 some odd years later !!

Title:  Two C&O F7s bracket 4 B&O geeps and F7s - October 1968 - 2 of 5
Description:  Torpedo boat geeps (main air reservoirs on top) provided for more fuel capacity, but at the expense of maintenance issues, as the hot exhaust cooked the compressed air. A lot of roads tried them and went away from them, and you don't see them today.

Title:  Two C&O F7s bracket 4 B&O geeps and F7s - October 1968 - 4 of 5
Description:  The caboose is tied down on the main, just a stone's throw north of Ridge Rd. The train is on the Kodak lead. Looking through the caboose platform (on the opposite end) and over the hoppers, you can see the crossing lights for Ridge Rd., along with the Kodak coal piles and ever-present poplars lining the property fence.

Title:  Two C&O F7s bracket 4 B&O geeps and F7s - October 1968 - 1 of 5
Description:  Typical weekend unit train power at Ridge Rd. The 100+ hoppers of coal have been put away inside Kodak and the crew is heading back in after lunch to sort the go-aways. Note the caboose on the main on the north side. If you knock the brakes off, it will roll past the switch for the Kodak lead to get it on the rear of the go-aways for the short trip back to Brooks Ave.

December 1968 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 1 of 5
Title:  December 1968 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 1 of 5
Description:  This view is from the sidewalk looking south towards the Kodak gate. The twins were shoving a cut of loaded hoppers into Kodak and split the switch with the usual effects. The switch (under the hopper in the foreground) allowed a short runaround to come in off the main from the south and join with the lead. The tool car off to the left is on the team track which came off the runaround. I never saw either used and both were torn out in the 70's.

December 1968 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 4 of 5
Title:  December 1968 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 4 of 5
Description:  This view is looking north from the runaround switch points. Ridge Rd. is in the background. It's hard to tell, but the runaround heads towards the WM hopper. The team track switch is barely visible in the weeds, but obviously still works since the tool car is sitting in the team track. Note the Kodak coal pile on the left and the BR&P concrete phone booth straight ahead on the main. The NYC is out of sight to the right.

October 1970 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 2 of 2
Title:  October 1970 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 2 of 2
Description:  Date approximate. The remnants (ties) of the former team track siding are in the foreground. Ridge Rd. is in the background. Apparently the siding trackwork had not been completely restored after the December 1968 derailment and the "fix" at that time retained some of the old switch elements, resulting in this mess - a couple of hoppers picked a spiked switch point, frog or low joint.

October 1970 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 1 of 2
Title:  October 1970 derailment at Ridge Rd. on the B&O lead into Kodak - 1 of 2
Description:  The twins are sitting on the main just north of Ridge Rd. That's the passing siding in the foreground and RG&E is in the fenced area behind the train. Nobody's going anywhere - the shove move into Kodak put a couple of hoppers on the ground. The crew cut them off and pulled over the Ridge to clear the crossing.

Work Extra - 2 of 3
Title:  Work Extra - 2 of 3
Description:  Pulling over McCall Rd. and yes, it's a cold, rainy day. Note the location of the switch just under the engine and first car. B&O-era runaround moves involved fouling the crossing. The switch has since been moved twice southward (in the R&S era) and now sits comfortably away from the crossing.

B&O Charlotte Docks - 2 of 6
Title:  B&O Charlotte Docks - 2 of 6
Description:  An excerpt from a Rochester Library map found here: http://photo.libraryweb.org/rochimag/rpm/rpm00/rpm00582.jpg Genesee Feldspar Company and its three tracks had been gone for many years by 1971. If you didn't know there was once a diamond in the dock lead, you never would have known it. All the other tracks indicated in this map were there up to the end, including the tail track shown to the left of the Feldspar trackage.

B&O Charlotte Docks - 4 of 6
Title:  B&O Charlotte Docks - 4 of 6
Description:  Date approximate. This is the tail track viewed looking to the north. The switch in the foreground on the right (behind the phone pole) was for the pair of tracks on the dock itself. The switch in the background, dead center on the tail track, allowed cars to be pulled from the yard (behind me to the left) and shoved out onto either of the dock leads. Locomotives were not permitted on the dock structure itself (posted sign: "no locomotives past this point" or similar wording - sorry, no photo), so each cut of cars was placed on a previous cut and shoved out until the leads were "full". Gravity takes it from there. Typical operation involved pulling a cut of loads from the yard (maybe 7-8 cars) past the switch, stopping to tie down the hand brake and open the knuckle on the lead car, then flipping the switch and shoving out onto either of the dock leads. If it looks like the tail track rises slightly going away from the camera (which would make sense), it probably does. I don't remember. If anything, it was at least level. The areas on either side descend toward the turning basin and the river, so the tail track was built on an embankment. It's still there today, should you want to go for a hike. You'll find some rotting ties and maybe a leftover spike or two. With regard to the Feldspar leads, the diamond had to have been between the two switches, but there's no evidence of it in this photo. It had to have been long gone before I got there.

B&O Charlotte Docks - 5 of 6
Title:  B&O Charlotte Docks - 5 of 6
Description:  No, it's not 1971 anymore. This is today's [approximate] view of the tail track in photo 4 of 6. Obviously, a lot of dirt has been pushed around since 1971. The path behind the swinging gates descends to the turning basin and the river. The remnants of the tail track are to the left of the path. It's hard to tell with everything leafed out, but in the dead of winter, you should be able to see the tail track appear to rise on your left as you walk down the path.

B&O Charlotte Docks - 6 of 6
Title:  B&O Charlotte Docks - 6 of 6
Description:  A lot of stuff in this view: At left is the current CSX (old NYC) Charlotte branch. The large facilty is the current International Paper (former Weyerhaeuser) plant, aka Rochester Folding Box, the last northern-most customer as of today (October 2020) on the Charlotte branch. [The track is OOS just to the north, slighly outside this view] The road at the bottom is Boxart Street, which now terminates at the Turning Point Park parking lots, which appear as a pair of blacktopped rectangles. The visible paved pathway (running north-south) leads from the parking lots down to the river. Just to the left (running roughly 6 o'clock to 11 o'clock) are the remnants of the tail track. If you go for a hike, you'll find it. Somewhere in the woods between the current CSX and the tail track was the location of the Roberts Dock, a predecessor of the Yates Dock, itself a predecessor of the Charlotte Dock. Years of operation for the Roberts and Yates docks are unknown to me. I assume operation of the Yates and Charlotte docks overlapped until the Charlotte docks became fully functional, obviating the need for the Yates dock. [The Yates dock location is to the north, out of view] There are paths (some paved!) in the Roberts dock area , but nothing to indicate the presence of a facility, in this case, gone for more than a century. Just for good measure, off to the far right and across the river, the roadbed of the former NYC State Street branch is visible in the trees, in the West Irondequoit neighborhood known as "The Flats".

Title:  Shoving into Kodak - 1 of 3

The belt after the docks closed - 1 of 2
Title:  The belt after the docks closed - 1 of 2
Description:  Date approximate. Could be '73 or '74. The view is from the glass factory roughly north to Dock Junction. The two switch stands on the left are for the glass factory siding and the siding on the opposite side as they connect back to the main (center). A couple of car lengths later, two more sidings emerge, one of which holds a covered hopper for the cement plant at the end of Boxart Street. The Dock Junction concrete phone booth is evident (almost head on) as the tracks curve to the left toward Stonewood. More switch stands are faintly visible to the left of the phone booth. Normally, everything would be filled with coal hoppers, both empty and loaded, but the docks are closed and nature is taking over. The RG&E power lines (left side) have since been replaced. The B&O poles (right) are simply gone today. The concrete whistle post next to the switch stands in the foreground is for Dewey Ave.

Description:  Brakeman Jack Kyle on the pilot. This view is to the north just a stone's throw from Latta Rd. The train is on the Lake Ontario State Parkway overpass and has just dropped off a car at the NYC (PC) interchange. I can't tell what it is, but it looks like a couple of storage tanks tied down on a flat car. Probably farm equipment. Neither the tracks nor the bridge exist today. The bridge was removed as part of the O'Rorke bridge project.

Description:  Heading home. Dock Jct. is off in the distance. The BR&P concrete phone booth is visible. The docks have been closed for a couple of years, so all the sidings are empty and unused. Bennington Dr. is on the left on the other side of the houses. The NYC is out of sight on the right.

Description:  March 1975 approximate - could be 1976. I left the car in the Latta Lea golf course parking lot and walked over to find C&O 3012 and B&O 3542 picking up a couple of empties out of Greece Lumber.

Description:  On the Greece Lumber spur. The main (track on the left) crosses Latta Rd. (a few hundred feet beyond this shot) and the Lake Ontario State Parkway on its way to the connection to the Hojack (NYC).

Description:  Southbound, about to cross Denise Rd. Both Denise and Britton Roads were protected by crossbucks only and the crews had more or less permanent "stop & flag" instructions because of the reduced sight lines. The family on the left (red fence) grew corn every year. Still a month or two from planting time.

Description:  Southbound, approaching Dock Junction. The docks have been closed for a couple of years, but the tracks are still in place. From right to left - the lead to the docks, a siding off the dock lead, the main, and another siding. Bennington Drive is out of sight to the left. The dock lead bridge over the NYC is out of sight behind me on the right.

Description:  Southbound with Dewey Ave. the next crossing (about a mile away). Note the Dock Junction BR&P era concrete phone booth. The stone appears to be dropped for the RG&E crews (new power poles on the right). The B&O's ballast was mostly cinders and certainly wasn't kept up after the docks closed.

Description:  Earlier that day, the crew worked Kodak. The last move left the Kodak go-aways tied down on the main while they went down to switch Greece Lumber. Note the switch is still lined from that last move.

Description:  The brakie has dropped off and is lining the switch for the main in order to add the Greece Lumber empties to the Kodak outbounds. Note the silver signal box on the right. Do you think Tim & Lynn are still a thing?

Description:  The train has been assembled, but there's still more switching to be done inside Kodak. The crew waits on the relatively "new" lead for the Kodak security guard. To the left, note the poplars are gone and Kodak has planted a string of pine trees. Note also the concrete BR&P era phone booth on the right.

Description:  About to cross the Ridge on the way home. In the foreground, note the remnants of the "old" lead into Kodak. Note also the brown building on the right (gone today). Do you think Chuckie & Colleen are still a thing?
