Going downtown
Title:  Going downtown
Description:  A westbound CR train has cut off its train at BD, and is taking the power, a pair of SD 40s and a GP 38, down to QD to work the Erie yard. This was my first visit to Binghamton, and I was not familiar with the symbols then; there were several trains that ran the line from Jersey to points test. A few years later, that would be trimmed to two, OIEL and OIBU. I would guess this would be OIBU, or something similar, as it showed in the afternoon, which was its usual time slot.

Approaching Binghamton
Title:  Approaching Binghamton
Description:  An intermodal train, Im guessing TV 78, about to roll into Johnson City on its approach to Binghamton. This area has seen a lot of change over the years. River Plaza to the left of the lead unit, has been mostly empty for years. The GE building above the train is now BAE Systems. To its right is now a Home Depot. The smokestack above the lead unit belongs to NYSEG's Goudy plant, a long time Conrail customer. It closed around 2005. Of course, Conrail itself is now a memory.

Idle power
Title:  Idle power
Description:  An odd couple sits at BD in Binghamton-the second unit is one of only 10 C30-7's on Conrail. Not sure why these two units were sitting here. May have been power off a coal train to Johnson City.

Title:  Blasting though
Description:  TV 303 rolls triumphally down Court St past BD as it heads west into the Susquehanna valley, having overcome Gulf Summit and the Delaware division. It will be in Buffalo this evening. That "Dicks" sign to the left of the lead unit marks the location of the first Dicks Sporting Goods store, opened in 1947.

Eastbound in the snow
Title:  Eastbound in the snow
Description:  Anywhere else, March would be a time of anticipation, as the world throws off the burdens of winter. Not so in upstate NY, where its just another month of snow and cold. BUOI is used to it, and is getting a good start on a trip down the Delaware Division to Jersey, here passing BD on the way out of town. It will be an easy trip, as the 44 cars in the train won't tax the power of the three units doing the work.

Passing by
Title:  Passing by
Description:  OIBU, on the left, has done its Binghamton work, and is now holding on track 1 as a late running TV 303 rolls past on track 2. It will cross over here, and run ahead of OIBU for a crew change and go at Gang Mills. The signal at right controls track 3(ex DLW) where it joins the ex Erie track 2 for the trip west. This was part of the West BD interlocking, installed in 1959 when the Erie and DLW consolidated facilities on the Tier.

Work extra
Title:  Work extra
Description:  Summer time was track work time, and the Tier was not exempt. This work extra rolls through West BD on its way east to another work site. On the left, we see the Vestal Spur, the remaining portion of the ex DLW still in service in the Binghamton area. At the time, there were still a few customers in Johnson City, as well as the NYSEG Goudy Station, and National Pipe & Plastic in Vestal. There is now(2015) nothing left on that line, and NS is looking to abandon it. Thats St Michaels Orthodox Church on the right with the gold dome.

DLW side
Title:  DLW side
Description:  WABH 11, the local that works the Binghamton area, is on the ex Lackawanna side today, and will head down the old DLW on the Vestal Spur to National Pipe and Plastic, the small remnant of the line west of Binghamton. The area Im standing in once serviced mail and express cars. The GP 38-2 was typical power for this job, though sometimes it got a B 23-7. By the early 90s, GP 40-2s were common. NS is presently(2015) using a pair of ex CR SD 40-2s.

Out in the high grass
Title:  Out in the high grass
Description:  Like many rail facilities that became underused, the ex DLW YO yard became overgrown. The were only a couple of tracks left which served the Agway feed mill, seen at right. WABH 11 had the task of servicing the customer, which we see here. The boxcars were filled with grain, also a relic of the past. It woule continue a few more years, and sometimes some real classics would show up. On at least one occasion I saw Erie cars here.

Description:  WABH 11 is working on the DLW side today, and has pulled out onto the Chenango River bridge for headroom on a cut of cars being worked in front of the old station. Today's power is a GP 40, a step up from the GP 38's and B 23's that were common on this job. The Derby Knitting Mill, at right, burned to the ground in a spectacular fire in June 2011.

Description:  The former DLW station at Binghamton gets a lot of attention(as it should), as do the buildings on the opposite side. One other building is notable for its turn of the century architecture, the Kilmer Building. At one time, the DLW had sidings serving it, now all abandoned. We see WABH 11 working on the DLW side in front of the Kilmer Building, today with a GP 40.

Title:  Upgrade
Description:  When I first moved to the Binghamton area, and for a number of years before that, I usually saw GP 38s or B23-7s on WABH 11. Late in 1988, there were GP 40s assigned, though they did not stay permanently til a few years later. Heres one working on the ex DLW, bringing some cars back from National Pipe in Vestal. Coal empties on the Vestal Spur
Title:  Coal empties on the Vestal Spur
Description:  By the 1980s there was little traffic on the Vestal Spur, except for National Pipe and Plastic, which was the last customer on the Vestal side of the river; and NYSEG's Goudy Station in Johnson City. Here WABH 11 is pulling empties past the abandoned factories of Johnson City. This was once the 70 MPH DL&W main line.
