Album Info:The ICG's Madison branch ran from Freeport, Ill to Madison, WI. and was completed in 1888. The IC built elaborate depots at Madison and Monroe. There was even a four stall engine house and turntable at Madison. To accomodate passengers, the IC used a motor car from 1908 to 1929, then a mixed train until the beginning of WWII. Freight service remained steady through the 1950's with coal, lumber, concrete, feed and perishables providing most of the traffic. With the arrival of diesels, the enginehouse was torn down in the early 1940's. The decline in business started in the late 1950's: Several stations were closed as offices were consolidated; by 1969 there was only a traveling agent left and by 1974, all agency work was handled out of Freeport. In the early 1970's, service was reduced from 6 trains a week to 3 a week. By 1976, the ICG filed to abandon the line. The state of Wisconsin purchased the branch in hopes of continued service, but after several failed attempts by shortlines, the Madison District was removed in the late 1980's.
