Title:
CRIP 4-4-2 #1016 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:
Not sure but this may be a photo taken by the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific shortly after receiving the 1905 Alco-Schenectady built 4-4-2 Atlantic. Specs - serial #28145, class A-24, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 183,300 lb, tractive effort of 24,699 lb. The class was retired between 1935-37. No date or photographer listed for the photo but I'm betting it was 1905 since each part of this loco shines!

CRIP 4-8-4 #5027 - Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific
Description:
Here is another example of a 1930 Alco-Schenectady built 4-8-4 Northern type locomotive for the Rock Osland RR. According to Drury (1993) in Steamlocomotives.com, this design's size and weight limited their operation to the Chicago-Des Moines corridor, the Chicago-Dalhart, Texas line, and the segment between Herington, Kan and El Reno, Okla. Later bridge-strengthening allowed thete heavyweights to pull freights and passenger trains to Denver, Fort Worth, Tucumcari, and Minneapolis. Specifics - 69" drivers, 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, 434,000 lb engine weigwt, 66,620 lb tractive effort. Wesley Krambeck photo

CRIP 0-6-0 #249 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:
Long before the U28B carried the number 249, this little 0-6-0 switcher held it. Couldn't find much information about it other than it had 52" drivers and generated 180 psi boiler pressure. Photo credit goes to Warren W. McCleary Jr - unknown location (possibly Rock Island shops) & date is approximate

CRIP 4-4-0 #609 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:
Built by the Rock Island shops in 1890, this cute 8 wheeler was a B-16 class locomotive with 68" drivers. It could develop a modest 160 psi boiler pressure for its 18"x24" cylinders. The engine weight was 107,300 lb and it could apply a modest tractive effort of 15,552 lbs but enough to move traffic at the turn of the century. Note the crew member standing by the front coupling - must be setting it for the next linkup . . . or cleaning dead cows from the "cow catcher"! Month and day in 1933 is approximate - unknown photographer.

CRIP 4-4-2 #1004 - Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
Description:
It appears to be near the end of this little 4-4-2 Atlantic style locomotive built by Also-Brooks in February of 1901 (serial #3766). It sits in an unidentified storage line missing its faceplate number and bell - sure signs the scrapper's torch will be next. Specs - class A-24, 78.5" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20.25x26" cylinders, engine weight of 162,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 23,089 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo but probably is around 1934 when the last of these locos were finally retired.

CRIP 0-6-0 #252 - Rock Island
Description:
Long before a U28 diesel wore the Rock Island number 252, this plucky little switcher had the honor. Built by Alco-Richmond in 1913, the little tyke has more pipes, ropes, tubing, and bumps to its boiler than something twice as big! No exact date was give. Photo stamp on back - Robert Graham.

Here is a beautiful builder's photo of an Alco built Mountain-type locomotive for the Rock Island line. Interesting to note is the Worthington Company eventually acquired Alco in 1964, long after its railroading heyday was over, only to go defunct in 1969.

CRIP 2-10-2 #3003 - Rock Island
Description:
Obviously this 1918 Alco-Brooks Santa Fe type 2-10-2 locomotive has reached the point of no return.
