INLX 146 & 203 - Arcelor-Mittal Hot Metal Bottle Cars |
Description: |
Always a delight to see these12 axle massive hot metal bottle cars (torpedo cars to some) rolling down the tracks between the former Inland Steel plant in East Chicago, Indiana and the Riverdale, IL finishing plant. What makes this time unusual is the lack of spacer gondola cars between these behemoths. I was told once the weight could damage the rails without spacers between, even if they were empty like these eastbound ones. Strange! First time to see this. |

INLX 201 - Arcelor-Mittal Hot Metal Car |
Description: |
Interesting hot metal car ("torpedo" car to some) on its way back to the former Inland Steel plant (now Arcelor-Mittal) in East Chicago, Indiana This is one of the last remaining spots to see these cars outside of a steel plant. The hot molten steel is shipped from the Arcelor-Mittal plant to the finishing plant in Riverdale, IL. The 2 to 6 car hot metal train usually has spacer gondolas between the cars to spread the weight. Not this time. |

INLX 202 & 146 - Arcelor-Mittal Hot Metal Bottle Cars |
Description: |
The former 12 axle hot metal bottle cars ("torpedo" cars) are a rare sight outside of a steel plant. Note the lack of spacer gondola cars between the bottle cars - unusual to say the least. Even empty, these behemoths carry a large amount of weight and usually have a spacer car to help distribute the weight between cars. |

INLX 203 & 146 - Arcelor-Mittal Hot Metal Bottle Cars |
Description: |
Rare sight to see these hot metal bottle cars and the first time I have ever seen them without spacer gondolas between the bottle cars to help spread the weight as they slowly travel between East Chicago, IL and Riverdale, IL. |

INLX 204 - Arcelor-Mittal Hot Metal Bottle Car |
Description: |
Massive 12 axle hot metal car, formerly Inland Steel car, is a 12 axle car built to transport molten steel between the steel plant in East Chicago, IN to the finishing plant in Riverdale, IL. It may be the only spot left in the US where you can see these rare cars traveling outside a steel plant. This trip is unusual since there are no spacer gondolas between the heavy 12 axle cars. Although empty this time, their weight is still quite large and usually needs to be spaced out. |

Line of Hot Metal Bottle Cars |
Description: |
The five empty hot metal bottle cars are heading back east from Riverdale, IL finishing plant to the former Inland Steel (now Arcelor-Mittal) steel plant in East Chicago, IL. Note the lack of spacer gondolas between the bottle cars - first time I have ever seen that happen! |
