Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Summer 2023
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
6/21/2023 - 9/22/2023
Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2023, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, MILW, and SOO rails, as well as FV&LS operating on former SOO, MILW, C&NW, and GB&W rails. Once in a while I hope to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:
IC 3138
Description:
A CN locomotive crosses Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 4 Jul. '23. The former SOO main line, also in use by CN, runs parallel along the other side of the train. The C&NW rails were laid in 1861, the SOO rails were laid by the Wisconsin Central (WC) in 1882. An office building at 55 Jewelers Park Dr., is partially visible to the right. It was built for Plexus in 1987, they vacated it after they moved into their new office building in downtown Neenah.

CN 2992 and CN 3012
Description:
A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it prepares to halt at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was preparing to halt to allow a southbound train to pass. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 3826 and CN 3820
Description:
A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

A FV&LS (or FOXY) train heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Town of Hortonia, Outagamie Co., WI, on 6 Aug. '23. The train is passing the new overpass which is being erected in order to carry the pending Hwy. 15 by-pass over the tracks. It’s cool that one old telephone pole stands along the right-of-way (to the right of the locomotive).

Description:
A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Greenville, WI, on 6 Aug. '23. The historic Greenville House, a.k.a. Kronser Hotel & Saloon, stands in the background. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station (formerly Bootleggers), with a first floor bar and a second floor resale store. Several references erroneously state that the building dates to 1887. The original hotel was erected in that year, but it burned down and the current facility was erected in its place. Some references also claim that the building has been called Greenville Station for over 100 years, but that too is an exaggeration.

Description:
A CN train passes the former C&NW depot and approaches S. 14th St. as it heads southwest with 23 3-bay covered hoppers at Manitowoc, WI, on 20 Aug. '23. I previously thought this depot had been built by the MLS&W ca. 1872. Some references state or suggest it could be the original depot built when the railroad was incorporated. However, the Sanborn maps reveal that this masonry depot was built between 1887 and 1894 to replace the earlier framed depot. If it was built prior to 1 Sep. '93, it was built by the MLS&W. If it was built after that date, it was C&NW. A couple of awkward additions were constructed after the railroad stopped using it. It is/was used by Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. They have a newer facility, not sure if they still use this or not. The C&NW built a new depot about a mile to the west in 1945, but that one no longer exists.
