Lightning in a Bottle |
Description: |
Frame grab from 4K video. CGs (cloud-to-ground lightning) had been striking to the west and north the whole time I was waiting for the train here, and I was hoping to capture something like this. A light shower had begun moments before the train arrived, and shortly the skies opened up and it poured the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon, all the way up to north of Junction City as I chased L581 toward Wausau. |

L581 power rolls into the yard to grab their train and blast off |
Description: |
CN's ex-Oakway SD60s have proven elusive for me (only caught two leading until this day) ever since they were brought onto the railroad in mid-2012. Nice to catch three of them in one shot, especially considering that in the last couple of years CN has retired most if not all of the GE units of similar age (ex-UP/C&NW C40-8s, ex-BNSF/ATSF C40-8Ws) that they acquired around the same time. |

Wet Pony |
Description: |
In my early days of railfanning 12-15 years ago, it was far more common to see NS power on CN than CP in Wisconsin. Then that flipped for a few years, then flipped again as NS power seemed to disappear from the CP(KC) for a while, then came back. Now it seems to be about even, although rather less common on both as of the second half of 2023. |

Northbound on the ex-MILW Valley Sub, CN 5430 hammers the diamond with the ex-Soo Line Superior Sub |
Description: |
Junction City is one of Wisconsin's busiest railroad hot spots. Over the course of various mergers through the years, both lines here fell under the control of Wisconsin Central LTD in the late 1980s. Their flag fell to CN in 2001. Nineteen years, 354 days elapsed between the last time I shot a train here, and this day. Those pictures are the first ones in this album. I didn't intend for it to happen, but it just kept getting kicked down the road. For some reason I had it in my head that it was a long ways away from me living in Madison, even though it's really only another hour beyond Wisconsin Dells, where I've shot CP(KC) trains on a quite regular basis over the years. The maroon and gold SD45s may be gone, but this pair of SD60s makes for a nice link back to the days when high-horsepower, spartan cab EMDs were the rule rather than the exception. I'll definitely be back again on a much shorter interval! |

CN 5430 disturbs the peace of this quaint central Wisconsin town |
Description: |
Crossing County Highway P/old US Highway 10 (now routed on a 4-lane bypass just to the north). They're used to it, as numerous CN trains pass through every day, mostly on the ex-Soo Line Superior Sub, but L581 northbound and southbound is one of several daily on the ex-Milwaukee Road Valley Sub. Junction City is classic small-town Wisconsin, with an approximately 1:1 (or possibly higher) ratio of taverns to residents. Many of them have local and/or vintage beer signs, such as Point Beer just behind the crossing signal, and (hard to see) PBR just behind that. The one thing that sets Junction City apart in this day and age is the extremely vibrant railroad presence, while so many similarly-sized communities just have a dirt-paved bike path where C&NW or Milwaukee Road trains once rumbled through, or perhaps stopped at the station. It's all freight in Junction City for over 50 years now, but the action is nearly continuous 24/7/365. |

Crossing the Wisconsin River where it flows out of Lake DuBay |
Description: |
Lake DuBay is a reservoir named for John Baptiste DuBay, a prominent early Wisconsin businessman/fur trader/Indian interpreter. In 1857 he was charged with murder for killing a man in a property dispute. Although acquitted, he was ruined by the ordeal and died at his homestead in Knowlton. This bridge is one of the scenic highlights of the Valley Sub, but never having chased on the line before I was too late to get more than handheld video here on the northbound trip. |

No, THAT way! |
Description: |
The crew has cut off 2275, to my confusion. To my further confusion, they proceeded to wye it to have it facing long-hood-forward westbound on the Whitehall Sub. After consulting with another area railfan, the only reason I can think of is that 2770 is not PTC-equipped, and they wanted 2275 facing forward to eventually lead the train east again and back into PTC territory. |

CN 2275 crosses the diamond with the stub of the ex-CNW/SOO Vesper/Marshfield line |
Description: |
This line joined with the ex-Soo Line (WCL/now also CN) Superior Sub mainline in Marshfield. Another stub of it remains on that end for service to a few remaining freight customers. |

Power off L576 with some interesting (by widecab GE standards) units |
Description: |
2029 is one of if not the last GECX ET44AC demonstrators still in blue and not "assimilated" into the CN scheme and roster. The 3300s are recent Wabtec rebuilds from Dash 9s, delivered starting in October, 2022. I had not previously been aware of this particular rebuild program! |

Description: |
I had not been aware there were still any B&LE units active on CN's roster, much less in Wisconsin, other than a few of the 900-series ex-tunnel motors! |
