After getting word that a passenger special would be running on the South Shore this morning, Dad and I decided to embark on a trip to Michiana to catch it, along with other trains in the area. We were hoping the further northwest we got, the more color we would run into, but it actually happened to be quite the opposite. That was a bummer, but we decided to make the most we could and see plenty of trains. We got an early enough start that we were able to start outside of the Chicagoland hold along CSX between Teegarden and Walkerton. CSX was fairly busy this morning, and it didnt take long for CSX M370 to come east with a YN2 leader. |

CN was the next one to make noise, and we decided to break away from CSX and go north to Kingsbury to catch the train coming underneath the old Wabash 4th District bridge that is still in place north of town. The welcome scream of EMD prime movers soon hit our ears as CN M394 raced north under the bridge with a welcome, and loud, SD75I leader. |

We grabbed one more shot a mile to the north at CR 1200N where there was a little bit more color. The 815 is the only active SD-M that remains on the CKIN roster, so it was pretty neat to see it in charge of this train. This would have to be the end of our chase along the CKIN, as the South Shore passenger specials departure was about a half hour away. |

There was very heavy maintenance work ahead at Laporte, and this train ended up stopping, pinning us from our vehicle which was on the other side. Thanks to the helpful aid of a local lady who lived in Hudson Lake, she offered to take us over to the other side. We could not thank her enough for her generosity! |

We went back to the South Shore because we were worried we would miss AF3 coming back. Well, it turned out we could have been even longer. NS sent 3 more trains between the time we left and the time it showed up. The same passenger set that went east came back west in that timeframe, now under CSS 24, passing underneath the Emery Road overpass on the west side of Hudson Lake doing every bit of track speed. |

Supposedly, an Anacosta Rail executive was retiring today, and to celebrate he got a short train ride to New Carlisle and back, which was the purpose of this special trip. If that doesnt tell you how much the South Shore cares about their employees, I dont know what else does. Something that is hard to find in todays PSR world on the big railroads. |

Despite the color not being that great, the day spent together was very enjoyable! Plenty of trains and variety. A good trip to Michiana! |
