Title:  CSXT 5956 with transfer cut crom CN in New Orleans
Description:  CSX job Y-305 with CSXT 5956 running hammerhead style passes eastbound through New Orleans's City Park on the Norfolk Southern's "Back Belt" line as it brings a transfer cut from Canadian National Railway's ex-IC Mays yard in Metairie, Louisiana. L&N Junction - eastward view
Title:  L&N Junction - eastward view
Description:  This is a view looking eastward on Norfolk Southern's Back Belt line. The long-unused interlocking tower on the left is L&N Junction tower. This is where the CSX mainline (formerly L&N) meets the NS Back Belt. Prior to 1950s, the L&N trackage crossed here and went down Elysian Fields avenue all the way to the Mississippi River. Three parallel tracks can be seen here. The one in the immediate foreground is the "Freight Lead". Behind it can be seen the "North Main" of the NS Back Belt, and the "South Main" can be seen to the left of it past the curve. Switches can be seen where the CSX mainline joins from behind the tower. A yard job working NS's Oliver Yard is seen in the distance, and the train is occupying part of the Freight Lead. Part of an arch span of the Elysian Fields overpass can be sen around the top and left frames of the picture. The next bridge in the distance is I-10. Behind it is the Franklin Avenue overpass.

NS to CN transfer returning to NS's Oliver Yard in New Orleans at Frenchman Street
Title:  NS to CN transfer returning to NS's Oliver Yard in New Orleans at Frenchman Street
Description:  In case any viewer might think that this image isn't properly rotated, the Southern cantilever signals at Frenchman Street really do cantilever more than they are supposed to do so! The sloping wires just above it also add to the optical illusion. Norfolk Southern's transfer to the CN is returning to its base at NS's Olvier Yard on NS trackage. Here, it is stopped at the Frenchman Street signals. This is train AN-41. The Florida Avenue Canal is seen in the left foreground, and Florida Avenue is seen at the lower right corner.

Description:  This view shows the southwestern corner of CSX's vast empire. CSX train Q-601 is leaving CSX trackage at L&N Junction and moving onto the South Main of the Norfolk Southern Railway's "Back Belt" line. The Q-601 is a run-through train to the Union Pacific at Avondale. Most of the traffic on this train will go to Englewood Yard, the UP's ex-SP yard in Houston, Texas. This train originates in Waycross, Georgia. I-10 can be seen in the background.

Union Pacifc train ILBNO comes to a stop at Frenchman Street on Norflok Southern's Back Belt trackage
Title:  Union Pacifc train ILBNO comes to a stop at Frenchman Street on Norflok Southern's Back Belt trackage
Description:  Typically, a fleet of eastbound and northbound trains get turned loose on the NS Back Belt after the 07:10 departure of Amtrak's CRESCENT, and this morning was no exception. After waiting on the returning CSX and NS transfer runs, UP train ILBNO grinds to a halt at Frenchman Street as it waits for the AN-41 to get out of the way. The ILBNO (Intermodal - Long Beach, Ca., to New Orleans, La.) is actually a run-trough intermodal train to the CSX, contrary to what its name suggests. (In the past, it carried New Orleans intermodal traffic, but no more.) The ILBNO, which carries international cargo, becomes CSX train Q192 to Atlanta, Georgia.

Description:  After waiting on the returning CSX and NS transfer runs, UP train ILBNO grinds to a halt at Frenchman Street as it waits for the AN-41 to get out of the way. (It's tail end was just past the Freight Lead switch.) Contrary to what its name suggests, the ILBNO (Intermodal - Long Beach, Ca., to New Orleans, La.) is actually a run-trough intermodal train to the CSX. (In the past, it carried New Orleans intermodal traffic, but no more.) The ILBNO, which carries international cargo, becomes CSX train Q192 to Atlanta, Georgia. About a thousand feet behind the locomotive, the train is stopped over Broad Street. Florida Avenue is seen at the lower left frame.

Title:  UP train QLINSB on NS trackage crosses Bayou St. John in New Orleans
Description:  A fourth eastbound/northbound train! UP train QLINSB on NS trackage crosses Bayou St. John in New Orleans. The QLINSB is a run-through train originating at the UP's hump yard at Livonia, Louisiana. It terminates on the Norfolk Southern in New Orleans, but a large block of it goes northbound to Birmingham, Alabama, (hence the "B" at the end of the train's name) on a northbound NS train.

ILBNO on the move at Raising Cane's
Title:  ILBNO on the move at Raising Cane's
Description:  After train QLINSB ahead of it got permission to move after waiting for a half hour for a welder to finish working on a frog, UP train ILBNO (Intermodal - Long Beach, Ca., to New Orleans) moves down to the foot of the bridge as I watch as I munch on my last chicken finger at Cane's. The ILBNO then had to wait a few hours as at least two trains went up the bridge.

BNSF-to-CSX military train U-BNTNWO1-27 on CSX trackage
Title:  BNSF-to-CSX military train U-BNTNWO1-27 on CSX trackage
Description:  This BNSF-to-CSX military train on CSX trackage is less than a mile from being delivered to CSX's Gentilly Yard where the BNSF shuttle crew that took it across the Mississippi River will detrain. The train traversed BNSF's ex-SP Lafayette Subdivision to get to New Orleans and passed through the eastern end of the subdivision just before the line was shut down for a few hours due to a train colliding with a truck in Parads, Louisiana. This train originated in Beaumont, Texas, the day before.

CN yard job relieves dead NOPB train at East Bridge Junction
Title:  CN yard job relieves dead NOPB train at East Bridge Junction
Description:  A New Orleans Public Belt Railway train on its way from Cotton Warehouse Yard in New Orleans to CN's Mays Yard in Metairie with about 60 cars died right in front of East Bridge Tower. A CN crew and locomotive came to drag the train into Mays Yard. This delay tied up the interlocking for about an hour; one UP train bound for the Norfolk Southern had to wait on the bridge for more than an hour.

Title:  KCS train M-CXSH parked on the NOPB with NOPB crew
Description:  While two runners prepare to climb the Mississippi River levee seen to the right, KCS train M-CXSH (Manifest -- CSX New Orleans to Shreveport) waits on the New Orleans Public Belt Railway's "East Main" at Eagle Street. The crew on the train is an NOPB crew, and the conductor can be seen on the ground in front on the locomotive. Shortly after this picture was taken, this train's counterpart - the M-SHCX - arrived with a KCS crew, and the crews swapped trains. The building sitting atop the levee in the distance on the right is the New Orleans headquarters of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The area atop the levee here is frequently visited by runners, joggers, walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders.

Amtrak's northbound CRESCENT leaves NOUPT trackage and entering NS Back Belt
Title:  Amtrak's northbound CRESCENT leaves NOUPT trackage and entering NS Back Belt
Description:  Amtrak train #20 - the northbound CRESCENT - is at the end of the NOUPT (New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal) trackage at East City Junction. It is entering the "North Main" of Norfolk Southern's Back Belt trackage as a UP-bound freight train holds the "South Main" on the right. The track veering of to the left ahead of the NOUPT trackage is the NS's ex-Southern Bernadotte Line, which once went as far as Trem and terminated on Basin Street but now stops at North Alexander Street at the line's last remaining customer, Masonry Products. The concrete piece in the foreground is part of the trestle over the Canal Boulevard underpass. Far off in the distance past the signal bridge, the NS tracks curve to the right and cross Interstate Highway 10 before going to single track and crossing the 17th Street Canal.

Amtrak's northbound CRESCENT passes under Frenchmen Street signals on NS Back Belt
Title:  Amtrak's northbound CRESCENT passes under Frenchmen Street signals on NS Back Belt
Description:  Amtrak train #20 - the northbound CRESCENT - passes under the Southern-style cantilever signals at Frencmen Street on the "North Main" of Norfolk Southern's Back Belt trackage. The track coming from the North Main right in front of the train is the "Freight Lead" that leads into NS's Oliver Yard. There, the train will turn north onto NS's NO&NE (New Orleans and Northeastern) mainline on its way north out of the city and, ultimatley, to New York. The canal at the left is the Florida Avenue Canal which parallels its namesake street to the south, just left of the left frame of the image. Far off in the distance, the top of a trestle is visible; this is the Broad Street underpass.

Title:  Amtrak's northbound CRESCENT prepares to leave Slidell, Louisiana.
Description:  The first station stop for the CRESCENT after leaving New Orleans is Slidell, Louisiana. Slidell owes its existence to the construction of what was then the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad across Lake Ponchartrain into New Orleans. The NO&NE went from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi. Today, it is the southwestern leg of the Norfolk Southern Railway's vast empire. Here in Slidell, several people board the train on its daily northward journey.

Description:  Parts of what will become KCS train M-CXSH have just been delivered to New Orleans Public Belt Railway's France Yard by a CSX crew. An NOPB crew will work the train and build a Baton Rouge block before it moves the train to NOPB's Cotton Warehouse Yard where a KCS crew will board it and move it for a few miles on NOPB trackage onto KCS's trackage. The sloping bridge in the background is the Interstate Highway 10 bridge crossing the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal.

Title:  EBTX 23101 moves westward on CSX train to UP in New Orleans
Description:  An odd flat car moves westward on CSX's Y105 moving toward an interchange with the Union Pacific. The pier in the left foreground is a support for the Interstate Highway 10 as it goes over the the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal (which the train just crossed on its own bridge.) In the distance can be seen the Chef Menteur Highway - US Highway 90 - bridge over the canal.
