NACC ?
Title:  NACC ?
Description:  North American Car Corporation (no number) at Igloo, South Dakota on August 25, 1983, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. If anyone knows anything about this locomotive, please leave a comment. It would appear to be an ex-US Army GE 80 ton, either USAX 7863 or 7870, an early production judging by all the trim plates.

PVRC 1
Title:  PVRC 1
Description:  Pajaro Valley Railroad Company 2-4-2T number unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection, presumed at Philadephia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in June 1890, photograph by Baldwin locomotive Works. The builder's plate was readable, it revealed construction number 10947, June 1890. Once upon a time you could purchase prints from H. L. Broadbelt from Baldwin negatives. I was collecting all the CB&Q steam builders photos that I could afford. This print was sent to me in error by Mr, Broadbelt. I brought it to his attention, he replied that I should keep the print. I obtained the following information from the Monterey County (California) Historical Society:

To supply beets to his Watsonville refinery, Claus Spreckels constructed a narrow gauge railroad from the Pajaro Valley beet fields to the factory using primarily Chinese labor. Incorporated in 1890, the Pajaro Valley Railroad extended as far south as Moro Cojo ranch in 1891, and also served the Moss Landing wharf. With construction of the new refinery, the railroad was expanded from Moro Cojo to Spreckels and the name was changed to the Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad--but it was known locally as the 'Dinky Line' because of its tiny engines. Branch lines extended south over the river bridge to Buena Vista, where beets were grown, and north, passing east of Salinas near the present airport terminal, to Alisal Canyon where Spreckels obtained limestone. In 1908, a branch line of the Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad was extended from Spreckels Junction into Salinas to carry passengers to and from the refinery. This was a route attempted by the Salinas Railway Company in 1897, but their operation was unsuccessful and folded in 1900. Approximately 1915 marks the heyday of the Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad; its lines had reached 54 miles. It consisted of nine locomotives, six passenger cars, two baggage cars, three combination freight and passenger cars and 260 freight cars. Riding the railroad from Salinas to the Alisal end for picnics was a popular pastime. The Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad hauled an incredible 174,480 tons of freight, and in 1919 it carried a record 158,871 passengers. But by the 1920s the truck, passenger car and bus, as well as the larger Southern Pacific Railroad, were cutting into its business. Regular passenger train service was the first to go, on November 24, 1925. By 1927 the freight routes were failing, and in June of 1928 the railroad petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon all of its routes. On December 5, 1929, the entire operation--40 miles of right of way, buildings, maintenance structures, 7 locomotives, 24 boxcars, 140 gondola cars, 4 flatcars, 3 dismantled dump cars, 2 combination baggage and passenger cars and 3 coaches--excluding cash on hand, 2 standard gauge steam engines, 2 busses and tracks within the Spreckels Factory yard, were sold to the Southern Pacific Company for only $10.00!

Austin Western Whitcomb
Title:  Austin Western Whitcomb
Description:  Austin Western Company unnumbered plant switcher at Eola, Illinois on January 29, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Information on this locomotive was a little hard to come by, here is what I have so far. It appears this locomotive was built by Whitcomb in January 1940 (c/n 60017), model 45DE, at the factory owned by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Rochelle, Illinois. The George D. Whitcomb Company, founded in 1877, came under the control of Baldwin in 1931, reorganized as the Whitcomb Locomotive Company. This locomotive worked at the factory in Aurora, Illinois. Western Wheeled Scraper purchased F.C. Austin Manufacturing Company in 1902, renaming it Austin Manufacturing Company, and manufactured road graders and 30 cubic yard side dump railroad cars, some of which were used in the construction of the Panama Canal. Austin and Western products were manufactured and sold under those names, although the Austin-Western name also appeared on machinery, especially in the early 1930s. Baldwin acquired Austin Western in 1951, and was acquired by Clark Equipment Company in the 1970's, who phased out production at Aurora. It appears this locomotive may have been acquired by Caterpillar (unconfirmed).

DAPX 210
Title:  DAPX 210
Description:  DAPX 210 at Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was an exhibit at a railroad trade show on the site of the Illinois Central's Central Station, which had been demolished in 1974. At the time of this photo, I was employed by a company with offices on the 52nd floor of the Standard Oil Building ( later, the Amoco Building, I don't know what it's called now ), which is the tall white building in the background. I looked out my office window and noticed a lot of activity where normally there was just empty tracks. I decided to check it out on my lunch hour. As it happened, I was dressed in a business suit so no one questioned my presence without credentials.

KMRY Davenport 13
Title:  KMRY Davenport 13
Description:  Kettle Moraine Railway 13, a 35 Ton Davenport at North Lake, Wisconsin on an unknown day in August, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as USAF 7561 35 ton, built in 1942 ( c/n 2456 ), a gas mechanical, to sold to Heil Corp ( Milwaukee, WI ) as number 13. It was acquired as KMRy 13. The following is from woodie at http://www.acmoc.org/bb/archive/index.php/t-18209.html

Davenport did build diesel-electric locomotives but this locomotive, typical of many such small industrial locomotives, did not have electric traction motors or a large generator. They used a 4 speed (each direction) manual transmission driven directly off the back of the clutch by a universal joint. Davenport used their own design of manual transmission that had the rear axle running through it to power it. The transmission could move up and down if it was on uneven track. It had siderods to transmit the power from the rear axle to the unpowered front axle. Chains could also be used to power the unpowered axle, if the customer specified it. It was called a diesel-mechanical locomotive. Most of their later models had a torque converter instead of a clutch. Of course, they could use gasoline engines if the customer requested it. The D8800 engine itself weighed some 2-1/2 tons, so that helped give the locomotive some needed weight for traction. Modern replacement engines do not usually weigh this much and tend to cause these little locomotives to be "light on their feet" for traction. Starting the D8800 was by pony motor on the side of the big block or a battery operated starter in that position.

It was transferred to the East Troy operation in 1939 after the abandonment of the railroad in East Troy. Eventually the Village of East Troy purchased the railroad and M15 and continued to serve freight customers. By 1971 the railroad was operated by a couple of historical organizations until purchased outright in 1995 by the East Troy Railroad Museum, and the M15 was sold to the Illinois Railway Museum.

M&StL GE-29
Title:  M&StL GE-29
Description:  Minneapolis & Saint Louis Gas Electric GE-29 near Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 20, 1957, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. The location is somewhat speculative because the slide is marked MINN. Number GE-29 was built in 1931, body by Saint Louis Car Company (c/n 1550), the power plant was 400 horsepower EMC Winton Model 148 gasoline engine (c/n 491) coupled to GE electrical gear. I don't know who is responsible for the boxy structure on the roof but it's likely the cooling system for the prime mover. This unit went by the name 'Montgomery' (painted above the rear truck) and was repowered in August 1950 with a Caterpillar 400 horsepower Model D diesel.
