Suprise
Title:  Suprise
Description:  As the W&W was working the north end of the yard, I thought I'd kill some time by driving down by the south end. Much to my suprise, I saw from the road the 3068 sitting in the yard, so, a quick turn around and a few minutes spent trashing through the small forest provided this view.

WW WST
Title:  WW WST
Description:  Tha tree has a date with a saw. Not this trip, but it's going to happen! WST passes through downtown Martinsburg. THis is the first time I've ever chased the WST going nortbound. Usually it works out that I'm in Hagerstown when they show up, and I chase them back south.

WW WST
Title:  WW WST
Description:  For those who don't know, the WST is so named because of the trackage it operates on. In Penn Central days, this was called the Winchester Secondary Track. From about a quarter miles south of this spot North to Hagerstown and points beyond, PRR and PC used this to haul coal trains from the West Cumbo (named for the Cumberland Valley, who built this line, and B&O Railroads) Coal Yard. You'll note a lack of ditchlights on the Virginia Division units, this is due to the low (10MPH) operating speed and that allows them to be exempt from the ditchlight rule.

WW WST
Title:  WW WST
Description:  The WST is now seen pulling around the east leg of the NS Wye. The track in Maryland is still owned and operated by Norfolk Southern as the Williamsport Industrial Track, but they still don't go any faster than 10! Back in the older days, the PRR/PC maintained an engine servicing area, that once even boasted a roundhouse, in the middle of this wye before traffic patterns shifted and they consolidated operations with the N&W at their Vardo Yard, which is NS's current Hagerstown operation base, and where the Virginia and Harrisburg Divisions come together.

WW WST
Title:  WW WST
Description:  The orange NS MOW cars are tie cars and there is an industry here (no buildings) that does something with the ties, but I can't remember what. You can see Conductor Gary has a big ol' smile on his face. This could possibly have something to due with the fact that, like me, last year we were both railfans, now we are railroaders! :) He will be cutting the train off, turning the engines on the wye and then shoving into NS's Vardo Yard to drop his 12 loads off and to pick up 13 empties. Unimin Coportation, the parent of the Winchester & Western, sure did choose a neat Nickel Plate-inspired paint scheme for the engines!

Description:  Here the WST is seen heading south with his cut of cars out of Vardo Yard. The man on the front of the loco was removed for the rest of my shots :) Thanks Gary! :D

A trio of EMD's
Title:  A trio of EMD's
Description:  Two of the three EMD's are obvious, but can you see the other? :) The WST cut it's train off up the hill and came down here light to meet the Sand Man (and go off duty).
