CB&Q E7 9931B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B on Train #15, the westbound Galesburg Local, east of Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was an accommodation train which departed Chicago at 6:20PM, stopping at La Vergne and Downers Grove before arriving at Aurora. These were likely stops for CB&Q employees. Number 15 continued on to Galesburg, making all the stops between. Train #15 (and its eastbound counterpart, Train #2) appeared in the CB&Q Employees Timetable #7 dated effective October 27, 1963, but not in the next timetable, #8, dated effective April 26, 1964, indicating that it was likely discontinued.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501), became BN 9912, and was scrapped April 26, 1972. It is equipped with two steam generators, the evidence being the rectangular exhaust stack to one side at the rear of the unit. It is seen here leading Train #2, the eastbound Galesburg Local, arriving at Union Station at 10:45 AM, according to the CB&Q Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #6, effective April 28, 1963. This train made most of the local stops between Galesburg and Aurora, stopping only at Downers Grove and La Vergne before the last stop in Chicago. It appears in Employees Timetable #7, effective October 27, 1963, but not in #8, effective April 26, 1964, suggesting that this train was cancelled.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931A on Train #10, the eastbound Denver Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois, April 21, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6500) on EMD Order E1006A, this locomotive became BN 9931 after March 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It was equipped with two Vapor Clarkson CFK 4225 steam generators. Some but not all of CB&Q's E7's were retro-fitted with stainless steel side panels. This locomotive retained its as-delivered Aluminum painted side panels to the end.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9912 sometime after the merger (March 2, 1970) and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It is seen here undergoing repairs at the Burlington's West Burlington shops. The occasion was steam fantrip powered by 4960, celebrating the birthday of 5632, which was also undergoing repairs at West Burlington. Although 9931B would be returned to service, 5632 would not.

CB&Q E7 9932B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9932B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9932B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6503) on EMD Order E1006A, it became BN 9913 and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co (after July, 1971, Precision National) on November 4, 1970. It is seen here heading a section of Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, east toward Chicago, about 28 miles from this point. I'm not sure, but this might be the second section of Number 10, since the class lights are not lit. The first car behind the motors (CB&Q term for locomotives) is a heavyweight Pullman, one of several Pullman sleepers purchased by the Burlington during 1948. Normally, heavyweight cars were not used on the Denver Zephyr, and this one was pressed into service as a dormitory car for the train crew (porters and dining car crew).

Built in March 1949 (c/n 6505), this locomotive became BN 9915 on March 2, 1970 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. I've marked the slide that this was Train Number 17, the California Zephyr. Generally speaking, the CZ did not have this much head end equipment, usually just a single stainless steel baggage car, so I assume the heavyweight baggage cars is a special move of some sort.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9935A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9935A eastbound on Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on September 12, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 8490), it became BN 9919 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. It is seen leading the Denver Zephyr east, about 28 miles left on the train's 1034 mile overnight journey. It was unusual for the CB&Q to leave the MU hatch open and the MU hoses in place on the front of the lead locomotive, suggesting that perhaps this was not the lead locomotive when it left Denver the previous day. One might speculate that perhaps the lead locomotive had a mechanical failure, or perhaps encountered a foreign object somewhere during the trip and was removed, and there was not sufficient time for the terminal crew to close the hatch and remove the hoses.

It is seen here leading Train Number 17, the westbound California Zephyr (CZ), the day after Christmas in 1965. Usually the CZ had two locomotives, and the addition of another would indicate extra passengers, and there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome.

CB&Q E7 9936A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9936A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9936A on Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, at Berwyn, Illinois on June 27, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Also seen in the distance is E8 9943A approaching the Berwyn station. This is a fortunate situation in that I generally took the train from Union Station, thus should have been aboard the approaching Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train). I happened to be visiting my friend Chris Burritt in Oak Park, and usually would backtrack by riding the CTA elevated train back into Chicago for the connection to the Q and ultimately, back to Naperville where I lived. But I was running late, so I took the bus down to the Berwyn station, where I caught this scene. I thought I could identify each train, but something is amiss in this shot. Looking at a 1965 calendar, this would be Sunday, which makes the Dinky a Sunday only all-stop train. I noted on the slide that the train led by 9936A is the Denver Zephyr. Here's the problem: according to my copy of the Employee's Timetable #10 in effect on this date, Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, departed Union Station at 5:00PM CST, and Train #225, the Sunday Only Dinky, departed at 5:01PM. Furthermore, the Dinky made five stops before arriving at Berwyn at 5:18. So, I am assuming the the DZ is running slightly late, not an unusual occurrence, especially in the summer, when often not only was it late departing, but sometime an overflow crowd of passengers would cause it to run in sections.

This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 8917) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9922 sometime after Mach 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering June 14, 1971. It was delivered with Aluminum painted side panels, and during a shopping, the painted panels were replaced with stainless steel laminate panels. Note that the trailing E7 has the original painted side panels. It was equipped with two steam generators. This is an extreme example of panning (moving the camera) to capture the moving subject. Unfortunately, everything else is blurred.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 at Denver, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 and was retired in September 1970. This unit is the only E7 on the CB&Q roster that did not have a suffix letter. There was only one other single E7 (9937A), all the other E7's were ordered in pairs. Also, the first E8 was numbered 9937B, and there was a single E8 numbered 9949A. I cannot explain why this unit was not numbered 9937B.

CB&Q E7 9949
Title:  CB&Q E7 9949
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 on a westbound Dinky at Naperville, Illinois on April 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 sometime after the March 2, 1970 merger and was traded to EMD on an order for SD45's September 14, 1970. This particular unit is numbered above the rest of the E7's, which were numbered 9916A-B through 9937A, and in A-B pairs except for the last unit, 9937A. Logic would seem to have this unit numbered 9937B, but 9937B turned out to be the first E8. To further confuse the issue, there was a single E8 numbered 9949A, with the first couple of E8 orders numbered 9937B, 9938A-B through 9948A-B, and 9949A. So far, I can find no explanation for this sequence anomaly.

CB&Q E7 9949
Title:  CB&Q E7 9949
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9949 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4501) on EMD Order E792A, it became BN 9925 and was retired in September 1970. It is seen here on an eastbound Dinky, with the power car on the east end, and unusual situation. Typically, the power cars were kept on the west end of the train to keep the noise and exhaust to the far end of Union Station.

Waiting for the Rain
Title:  Waiting for the Rain
Description:  This has to be the EB Afternoon Zephyr but my notes don't show the train number (see comments below). The exact E7A is unknown. Note the Roundhouse and State Capitol above the last car and the GN diesels to the right. Part of the St. Paul skyline is to the left. The first dome car is the original home-made dome, named Silver Dome with unique dome shape and no lowered floor beneath the dome because it was a coverted coach. The shot was taken at Division Street Tower and the train is about 2 minutes out of St. Paul Union Station. If you look over the last dome you can see the Capitol dome. See comments below.

Three E7As Blow Their Soot Leaving Chicago Union Station with the CZ
Title:  Three E7As Blow Their Soot Leaving Chicago Union Station with the CZ
Description:  After idling in Union Station, the first time the engineer notched up all the built-up soot in the cylinders was blown out as these three elephant-style ladies demonstrated. Photo taken from Roosevelt Road Bridge. The tallest building to the right is the Board of Trade, which today would be obscured by the new and larger Board of Trade Building. The whitish building to the left is the Post Office in the air space above the Stations south tracks. It has a hole through it for Architect Daniel Burnhams Congress Boulevard (Eisenhower, nee Congress, Expressway).
