CNW 4-6-2 #505 - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
Although an E9 wore the CNW #505 later, the first to do so on the CNW roster was this 1909 Alco-Schenectady built Pacific. It was an E class loco with 75" drivers and could develop a very respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 25"x28" cylinders. The engine weight came in at 260,000 lb and its tractive effort was a medium 39,667 lb. Unfortunately its days of service are fast drawing near as the age of steam is disappearing in the 1950's. |

Submission #600. Date approximate, but its way back when I had more hair, and less waist. This engine was in tough shape when this photo was taken--I hate to think what kind of condition it's in now. I can remember a time back in the early 1960's when they would still fire up #578. I don't think she's had a fire in her belly for a long, long time. |
