B&MR 4-6-0 294
Title:  B&MR 4-6-0 294
Description:  Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 4-6-0 294 at Paterson, New Jersey sometime in May 1892, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This ten wheeler was built by the Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey, completed in May 1892 as B&MR 294. During 1898, the Burlington System created a classification system for its locomotives, and this one became a class K-1, with no change in the number. During 1904, the Burlington consolidated the locomotive numbering system, and 294 became CB&Q 626. It was retired in December 1931.

CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-1 615
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-1 615
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-1 615, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. The location and date are based on information from the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route. Built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works in March 1892 (c/n 4680) as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad number 283, it was renumbered into the CB&Q system during 1904 to 615 and classed as K-1. It was assigned to the Saint Joseph Division as of June 1, 1935, sold to the Saint Louis and Hannibal Railroad in June 1937. It is seen here with the main rod disconnected and placed on the running board.

CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 630
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 630
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 630, date, location and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 630 was built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works in September 1892 as B&MR 302 (c/n 4766), renumbered into the CB&Q system as 630 and classed as K-2. It was retired in November 1946. The date (December 1, 1944) and location (Lincoln, Nebraska) were chosen based on information in the December 1, 1944 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet, which shows this locomotive assigned to the Lincoln Division. Based on the wide space between the domes, position of the bell, and what appears to be a platform in the space between the domes, I would speculate that this locomotive was once used in commuter service. The space and platform were for the Curtis steam turbine generator to power the train lighting, likely removed and applied to the more powerful Pacific type locomotives later used in commuter service.

CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 646
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-2 646
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-2 646 at Clyde, Illinois on October 3, 1937, photograph by Mr. Griffin, print by C.T. Felstead, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 646 was built by the Rogers Locomotive And Machine Works in January 1893 as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad number 318, renumbered into the CB&Q system as 646 in 1904, classed as K-2, and sold for scrap in July 1952. The wide space between the domes and the forward position of the bell would suggest that this locomotive was once in commuter train service and equipped with a Curtis steam turbine generator to power the train lighting.

CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-10 960
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-10 960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-10 960 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown date in 1952, photograph by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 960 was built by Rogers in April 1900 as B&MR 56 ( c/n 5525 ), renumbered in 1904 to CB&Q 2-6-0 Class H-4 1238, rebuilt by the CB&Q at Havelock, Nebraska in August 1908 to 4-6-0 Class K-10 960, sold for scrap in September 1953.

An interesting note about the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works ( later, a subsidiary of Alco ); the Works did not have a direct rail connection. The nearest railroad was the Erie, about a mile from the factory. The finished locomotives were hauled through the city of Patersonn New Jersey, first on temporary tracks laid in the streets and pulled by teams of as many as 20 horses. Later, when streetcars were operating in Paterson, heavy flatcars were used, again using "horsepower".
