Description:  MP SD50 5004 at Cotter, Arkansas on March 11, 1989, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a unit coal train to a power plant at Newport, Arkansas. I witnessed the unloading process on another train and the power will stay coupled to the train as it is pulled through the rotary unloader by the power plant's mechanical arms. I was surprised to find out the rotary was operated by a plant employee, not a railroad employee. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to inspect the condition of each piece of rolling stock as it turned upside down.

Description:  MP SD50 5017 crossing the White River at Cotter, Arkansas on October 29, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a loaded unit coal train decending a 1 percent grade into Cotter Yard, about a half mile beyond this point, where the crew will change. Unfortunately the MP ordered their SD50's without dynamic brakes, so it will require air brakes to control this train into the yard. The MP was a power braking road, meaning the locomotives kept pulling even when the brakes were applied in order to keep the train stretched. Of course the engine brakes were bailed off. The purpose was to keep from breaking coupler knuckles.

Description:  MP SD50 5029 at Cotter, Arkansas on July 17, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5029 was the trailing unit on a coal train destined for a power plant in Newport, Arkansas. I'm not sure of the details, but this train arrived two days earlier and parked in Cotter. Not wishing to walk a mile to get to the Cotter depot, the head-end crew cut off their train and ran around it, parking the power next to the caboose.

There appears to be six SD50's dragging an empty unit coal train up a grade out of Cotter, two more units than usual, suggesting an equipment move perhaps. This started out as a perfectly lit scene, until train time, and then a cloud rolled in, and so this is what you get.
