CN 6213 |
Description: |
Pic 7 - The long-awaited move of former Canadian National steam locomotive CN 6213 to its new home took place June 10, 2009. The 1942 Montreal-built locomotive had been on display at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds since soon after its donation to the city of Toronto in 1960. Built in August 1942 by the Montreal Locomotive Works, it was part of an order of 35 identical locomotives built for the CNR during World War 2. 6213 is a U-2-g Class Northern-type steam locomotive with a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. The engine and tender are 95 feet long, 15 feet high and weigh 315 tons. Each of the eight driving wheels is six feet in diameter and weighs over three tons. The engine was capable of speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The tender behind the locomotive is a Vanderbilt type, providing a capacity for 11,600 Imperial gallons of water and 18 tons of coal. No. 6213 was used to haul both passenger and freight trains well over a million miles during its 17-year career based in locations that ranged from Halifax to Saskatoon. |

Great action shot of Canadian National 4-8-4 #6215 heading up a crack varnish train. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in August of 1942 (serial #69713), the loco lasted for only 19 years before being shoved off the roster by diesels and assigned to the scrapper's torch. Description: |
This appears to be one of many fan trips that Canadian National 4-8-4 #6218 headed up in its many years of service. Built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in September of 1942, it was one of the lucky ones to survive the scrapper's torch as it was retired in April of 1960 and donated to Fort Erie, Ontario in October of 1973. No exact location or date was given but I believe it may be near Orillia, Ontario, sometime around 1960's. Can anyone help with the location? This is a W.H.N Rossiter photo. |
