They are pulling a mixed-cargo train that originated in Hollidaysburg into the Altoona Yards, and are about to pass under the new 4th Street Bridge. Also visible are two locomotives returning to East Altoona from helper/pusher duty. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8656 and #8675. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each.

Description:  WYE Tower. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here is PRR engine #8619, an AS-18M built by American Locomotive Company during August of 1956 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train that is still crossing US Route 22 on its way from Altoona to Hollidaysburg. That's WYE Tower on the right. The pipe coming from the Tower to the switch on the left indicate that the switch was opened and closed via compressed air. Duncansville's Third Street is in the photo's center.

Description:  Northbound Coal. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Columbia Crossroads, Pennsylvania, on 5 May 1957. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4311, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S in November of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in August of 1934, and retired in October of 1959. It's pulling a northbound coal train along with two PRR Diesel locomotives: #8626 and #8620. Both are AS-18M's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8626 was constructed in February of 1957, but #8620 was built in August of 1956. The slide's caption indicates that these three engines are, in effect, towing PRR I-1SA "Decapod" #4632 (the pusher engine) which has become disabled! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-19).

Description:  This A1800 hp lco RS11 was built sometime in 1956-57 and was a class ARS18m. After being absorbed in the Penn Central, it would be renumbered as PC #7639. The date is approximate but with Warren Evans help, the date must be after 1966 when PRR used large numbers on the cabs. With the help of Daniel Andres, Jr, who identified the location (see comment below), this was taken at upper Bel-Del yard in Phillipsburg, NJ. Forrest Trittenbach photo
