Amtrak dome coach 9464 in Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown day in April 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9464 was built by Budd in 1955 ns GN 1324, was to become BN 4604 (number not applied) became AMTK 9464 in 1972 and was retired by Amtrak in November 1977. It went to Rail Dome Corp. in 1978, to Robert Moen in 1987, to Dave Varilek in 1995. |

GN #1324 |
Description: |
Built in 1955 by Budd in Lot #9646-155 as GN 24 seat dome 46 seat "long distance" leg rest chair #1324, 1 of 16 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1954 for the 1955 EMPIRE BUILDER; cars were delivered between June and July 1955. GN owned 12 (#1320-#1331), SP&S owned 1 (#1332), and CB&Q owned 3 (#1333-#1335). These 16 cars were intended to be renumbered as BN #4600-#4615, but these numbers were not applied. In 1971, these cars were acquired by Amtrak as #9460-#9475, the #1324 as #9464. The #9464 was wrecked on 12/16/1976 in the consist of the eastbound #6 SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR at Ralston, NE. It was subsequently retired in November 1977 and sold in 1978 to the Building Leasing Corporation. The #9464 was owned by 2 additional parties before being sold to Dave Varilek, and in 2014, Iowa Pacific acquired 5 Budd cars from Varilek, including the #1324. Great Northern Dome Coach 1324 |
Description: |
Built by Budd in 1955. It became part of the BN roster in 1970 and was sold to Amtrak in 1971, becoming AMTK 9464. The car was wrecked at Ralston, NE in 1976. It was sold to Building Leasing Corp. in 1978 and then to Rail Dome Corporation. It was again sold to a private owner in 1987 and once more to another in 1995. Kasten Railcar would buy it in 1996. It was sold back to the 1995 owner in 1998. The carbody was sold to Iowa Pacific in 2014. In 2022, it was sold to a Dark Sky Station. |
