Chicago Great Western Railway GP9m 120 in Chicago, Illinois on February 13, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as a GP7 in September 1951 (c/n 14719) on EMD Order 5102, it was wrecked during 1955, returned to EMD and rebuilt to a GP9m (1500 hp) on EMD Order 8041, became C&NW 120 upon merger, rebuilt by C&NW to 4337, and eventually became MRL 115. It appears to have a steam line, odd considering there is no water tank and no apparent steam generator. The only explanation I can come up with is that this unit (and GP7 121) could be used as trailing units on passenger trains if the unit leading generated steam. |
