January 1977 was a bad winter in the Northeast. I was trying to get to Chicago and when this picture was taken the train had just arrived 25 hours late. The three SDP40Fs are dead except for their steam generators and the train was pushed by three Penn Central freight units starting someplace in Ohio. The delays were caused by freight train derailments and thus long detours and engine failure. Yes, this day's Broadway should have arrived an hour ago but was somewhere out maybe in Indiana or Ohio. My wife had called Amtrak (pre-Julie) to get an ETA and was asked which day's Broadway! |
