Precision National SD18m 1837 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois, June 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1959 as Southern SD24 2518 (c/n 25614) on EMD Order 5606, it was renumbered by the Southern to 6337, sold to PNC January 1978, was leased for about a year as PNC 6337, rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen to SD18M (including removal of the turbocharger and disabling the dynamic brakes), returned to PNC as 1837, rated at 1800 horsepower. It was leased to the BN for about a year, then C&NW first leased 25 units (of the original 53 units in PNC 1800 class), beginning in late November 1980, and bought 26 units from PNC on March 31, 1982. This unit became C&NW 6638. |
