C&NW rebuilt Baldwin/EMD S12M 1126 at about Michigan Avenue and Illinois Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The primary purpose of this track at the time of this photo was to serve the Chicago Tribune newspaper, generally moving boxcars of newsprint paper into the track in the foreground. On this day there is a parked automobile to be moved first, and while we're waiting, we have a few human interest stories unfolding. For instance, above the locomotive's headlight, (in the background) someone is unload something from a trunk, and a woman appears to be watching out. On the far center right is a security guard conversing with somebody. And the guys in the lower left decided to park between the trucks to discuss the day's events. The rails behind the locomotive lead to Navy Pier. During the Bi-Centennial, the American Freedom Train was moved (carefully) down these rails and displayed at Navy Pier for a few days. |
