SOU 630 backs past the Woodall Rd. station to its train in Kinney Yard
As a bit of RR trivia... it was on this date, March 25 in 1975, that Amtrak's "Mountaineer", a 2-year experimental train, began revenue service. It operated over the N&W from Norfolk to Kenova, WV, and at Russell, KY, was combined with the C&O-hosted "James Whitcomb Riley" for the trip on to Chicago. THIS building was the station stop for the Mountaineer, replaced later by the "Hilltopper". N&W placed this building into service as its Lynchburg stop in December, 1964, when it vacated Union Station located in downtown Lynchburg at the foot of Ninth St. Passenger service on the N&W ended on May 1, 1971, with the start-up of Amtrak.
