Horseshoe Curve-1948. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1948. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3273 and a T-1 (4-4-4-4) "Duplex" whose road number is not recorded. #3273 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during November of 1915 and retired in August of 1949 after 34 years of faithful service. They're pulling the "Metropolitan" from New York City to Chicago. At Gallitzin, the crew of #3273 will uncouple "on the fly" and then head back to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Pennsy Steam Locomotives" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (109-6). |
