This poor 2-8-4 Berkshire sat in the lined-out scrap line from its retirement in 1958 until it was finally scrapped in 1961. Built by Lima in April of 1944, PM #1228 (serial #8462, class N-2) served first the Pere Marquette Railway and then in 1947 merged onto the C&O roster but was never renumbered. Final specs - 70" drivers (upgraded from 69" in 1947), impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x34" cylinders, engine weight of 442,500 lb, tractive effort of 69,350 lb.
