| While making my way to Vancouver, I fired off a couple shots of the Union Pacific yard in Portland while crossing overhead. This image, while blurry, was still salvageable. The stack train in the background is parked on the main track that bypasses the yard. The bottom tracks are the northernmost tracks of Albina Yard (mostly empty today due to a traffic downturn), and the middle tracks are MOW and engine terminal tracks. Parked on the engine terminal lead are three engines and a slug. After careful examination of the engines and images on rrpicturearchives.net, I was able to identify the middle engine and slug as UPY 3001 and 3002. 3001 is a GP59ECO, an ex-Cotton Belt GP40-2 rebuilt with a 710ECO engine. 3001 is the only engine of its kind on the UP (as far as I was able to deduce), and is mated with slug 3002. 3002 was another Cotton Belt GP40-2. Its engine was removed, and its traction motors now provides increased tractive effort at slow speeds. The two unit set is captive to the Portland area, operating at Brooklyn and Abina Yards. |
