PRR 4592, I-1S, 1935
Here is a photo via Paul W. Prescott that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 10 August 1935. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4592 and #6843. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #4592 is an I-1S constructed during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1936, and retired in February of 1952. #6843 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in September of 1926 and retired in March of 1957. In this context, they're pulling a westbound mail and express train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the "Decapod" will be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for another assignment.
