NJT GG1 #4877 - New Jersey Transit
A small group of rail fans catch a view of "Big Red" with a long string of commuter cars doing what this locomotive was built to do - haul commuters at incredible speeds smoothly and efficiently. Sorry we will never be able to see one of these beauties perform again! An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party.

Tom Beckett General At South Amboy, just getting underway to New York. He'll stop at Perth Amboy, Avenel, Woodbridge, then get on the Corridor at Union Tower in Rahway, and then it's off to the races, making Newark before going into Penn Station. Back in the dark ages-1982-I dated a girl from Red Bank, and we'd sometimes ride in together on one of these trains. I recall one morning, there was an Amtrak Corridor train behind a then new AEM 7 on an adjacent track as we came up the ramp at Union. It was as if the motorman on the G looked over and said, "Oh yeah?" and we took off. The acceleration on a 43 year old G was enough to push you back in your seat. We beat the Amtrak train handily into Newark. The G's were quite a locomotive, even in their later years!! 7/21/2024 6:04:02 AM
