CB&Q SD9s 454
Title:  CB&Q SD9s 454
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9s 454 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in March 1961, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built September 1957 (c/n 23633) on EMD Order 5549, it became BN 6201 and was retired February 1985. It was one of 20 (#'s 440-459) built in what the CB&Q classed as a SD9s, the lower case "s" denoting a single control stand. Most CB&Q SD9 locomotives were equipped with dual controls and signal (Mars) lights on both ends. The 20 class SD9s had a single fuel tank and single signal light on the front only. This order represented the last SD9's delivered to the CB&Q, although subsidiary C&S received two orders of SD9's (#'s 820-830 and 831-842), the second order being Phase II design with a taller cab and short hood, 48" fans, and a fuel breather pipe. This order brought the CB&Q total of SD9's to 80, and with the addition of the 23 C&S SD9's, the systemwide total was 103 units, second only to the Southern Pacific.
