This rare original photo is of Preston 2-8-0 Consolidation #18 working the yard at Crellin, MD. Original, Preston #18 was built as West Virginia Northern #8 by Baldwin in September of 1904. it served the WVN along with its sister #9 for more than 45 years before being sold in 1950 to the Preston Railroad of Crelllin, Md as their #18-19. In 1961, Earl Leap of Madley, Pa, bought both engines. He eventually sold them to Don Leap in Hyndman, Pa, in 1970. They sat in storage until the West Virginia Railroad Museum bought both engines in 2005 with the intention of repairing them to be operated in tourist service. #18 in still in storage awaiting restoration. Specs - serial #24738, class 10, 46" drivers, modest 160 psi boiler pressure, 21x24" cylinders, modest engine weight of 140,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 31,292 lb. No photographer was listed. PRRR is not a valid reporting mark - none was given for Preston RR. |
