Helpers
Title:  Helpers
Description:  Washington Hill in western Mass was a manned helper district in the mid 80s. A helper set has passed under the local road that passes over the crest and is headed toward Westfield. The GP 38 was an outlier here. The Albany Division, and the Boston Line especially, was almost all GE's in this region. Selkirk was the major maintenance base for GE's on the Conrail system.

Racks west
Title:  Racks west

They had a big unloading facility near Selkirk, and another one for the NY metro area at Doremus Av in Newark, adjacent to Oak Island. One of the Doremus Av trains rolls west through the ex NYC station at Utica behind a relatively new SD40-2, and an ancient SD 40.

Work train
Title:  Work train
Description:  Conrail seemed to always be doing work on the River Line, which usually meant not a lot of action during the day. Today will be another work day, so I headed over to the Southern Tier Line, which turned out to be a good move. Not only did I get a pair of RDCs on the scoot, but SLN 4 behind a pair of C 420s and an SD 45.

Racks north
Title:  Racks north
Description:  There was a large auto facility at North Bergen, and it was not uncommon to see rack trains on the West Shore. This one is rolling toward Selkirk at Ridgefield Park, having just started its journey. As you can see, Conrail was not shy about mixing types of power. Oddly, I had been in Montreal several weeks earlier, and seen VIA 6793 while there-same number, two railroads, two weeks apart. Go figure.

Title:  DNDA
Description:  I do not have a symbol in my notes for this train, but it looks like DNDA, which was the main auto rack train on the West Shore, and usually appeared some time in the morning. Ill hazard a guess thats what this is, seen at Bogota.
