Viewing Album: Northeast WI, Summer 2015
By:
T. P. Bruss
Dates:
6/21/2015 - 9/22/2015
Album Info:
Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the summer of 2015, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

GTW 4910
Description:
CN local passes the former C&NW depot and Mile Post 0/243 at Green Bay, WI on 11 Aug. '15. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. Since 1996 it has been home to Titletown Brewing Co. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail.

IC 9562 and GTW 5854
Description:
CN local crawls onto the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services Expera Specialty Solutions (out of frame to left) at Kaukauna, WI on 11 Aug. '15. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The rails used to run past the red flag at the end of the bridge to the C&NW's Kaukauna yard, shops and round house. A line also branched off to go to Manitowoc. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). The rubble behind the snow fence is remnants of the old Thilmany mill, which was mostly demolished in 2013. Part of the original mill was saved and will be restored.

GTW 5854
Description:
CN local crosses the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Kaukauna, WI on 11 Aug. '15. The Warren pony truss bridge was built in 1893, according to http://bridgehunter.com. I suspect the metal components in the foreground might be for repairs to the bridge. The rehabilitation of the Kaukauna locks is nearly complete and they are scheduled to reopen in a couple of weeks (they haven't been opened since 1984), which means the bridge will need to swing again. The local has just finished servicing Expera Specialty Solutions, originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., and must now ascend a significant grade back up to the main line.

GTW 6228
Description:
CN local approaches Racine St. while sorting cars at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Description:
CN local crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. If you ask me, we do not see enough crossing signs that say “5 Tracks,” or more, around here anymore. I imagine the railroad wishes that Appleton St. did not bisect this small yard. Up until about 30 years ago this street also bisected the similar-sized Milwaukee Road (MILW) yard that used to stand behind me.

CN 68533, ex-GBW X-190
Description:
CN#Jordan spreader/plow, CN 68533, spotted on a former SOO spur at Frisby, WI (now part of Marshfield) on 22 Aug. '15. This is the former GBW X-190, the remnants of X-190 can be seen in the rust patch under the current road number. It was originally an early knuckle braced model, but it was later extensively rebuilt at the Jordan factory. Frisby was a small station, out of frame to right, that served the adjacent Wood County Asylum. The station was built ca. 1910, when the asylum was built, and was named in honor of Dr. Almah Frisby, a frequent visitor to the asylum on her inspection tours as a member of the state Board of Control. Frisby was Mile 268.1 on the C&NW Fond du Lac to Marshfield line and Mile 2.5 on the SOO Mbrshfield to Nekoosa line. Both roads ran parallel through here for about 80 years, until the C&NW rails were abandoned in 1981. The SOO rails were truncated out of frame to left quite a while ago as well.

CN mixed freight approaches Wood St. and passes the former Vetter Manufacturing Co. as it slows to halt at the former SOO yard at Stevens Point, WI on 22 Aug. '15. The Vetter Manufacturing Co. planing mill and sash and door factory started in 1893, when Herman August Vetter purchased the abandoned Herren and Wadleigh planning mill. The following yeaq he partnered with his brother, Carl Henry Vetter. In 1909 they constructed a large, modern factory which would quadruple their capacity. The 4-story, 72' x 250' re-enforced concrete and brick building was built for $35,000. That building is on the north side of this building, which is the 72' x 160' warehouse they built in 1915 on$the site of the original wood-framed mill. The company was purchased by Sentry Insurance in 1981. I have not discovered when it closed, it has stood idle for many years. Earlier this year it was announced that VPK Packaging, a Belgian co. founded in 1935, would take over part of this facility for its 1st U.S. factory and make cores for the foil and paper industries. Stevens Point was originally knowns as Shaurette Rapids. Green Bay & Western (GB&W) rails ran along Wood St. for many years and a GB&W engine house was located across the street from Vetter Mfg. Co.

CN 4028
Description:
CN local extracts two covered hoppers from Kimberly-Clark’s Neenah Nonwovens Faciity via former C&NW rails on the edge of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '15. I wasn't sure if this facility still received rail service, this is the first time I've seen cars being spotted here. In Mar. 806 K-C announced they would close or sell the facility by the end of the year. I guess they changed their mind.

Description:
CN local parallels Hwy. 41 and passes under Hwy. G as it services a couple of industries along the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 29 Aug. '15. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, o}iginally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOM’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected afuer the depot was removed, is gone.

EJE 660
Description:
CN local crosses the former N. Union St. grade crossing and is about to disappear behind the north side of the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 3 Sep. '15. The first part was constructed in 1905, over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-1970s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early 1983, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. circa 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, gift boxes, crepe paper, even paper dolls, but especially gift wrapping paper. There aren’t any business signs on the building now and I haven’t been able to learn who currently owns it. The roof line above the TPPX car on the left is part of some new apartments or condominiums under construction where the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex stood. Incorporated in Dec. 1888, Eagle made gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements. They built that factory in 1904, after they outgrew their original facility in the Flats. There was a diamond on the opposite side of the train (near the tree between the wood chip gondola and covered hopper) for two intersecting spurs that served Eagle, Ideal Lumber and Coal Co., and C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers.
