Lock & Dam crossing

Description:  We arrive at the former grade crossing that gave access to the western side of the Lock & Dam, a structure originally built in the 1880s to allow navigation of the Moose River by a shallow bottom steam boat.

Lock & Dam
Title:  Lock & Dam
Description:  Looking to the south east from the tracks we see the location known as Lock & Dam. The dam has been rebuilt over the years to maintain its integrity but with no need for steam boats to navigate the river the Lock was filled in a long time ago. This has long been one of my favorite places to photograph Adirondack trains, and has also become one of my favorite locations along the line period.

Description:  Continuing north, we get to the area where the south end of the east passing siding in the Thendara yard once extended to. There were several industries located within the Thendara yard and this siding served them. Ii also was where the branch to Old Forge diverted from. It was once the longest siding on the division outside of the Tupper Lake and Malone yards.

Fulton Block Sign
Title:  Fulton Block Sign
Description:  The Fulton block sign marks the southern end of the Thendara Yard Limits. Any operation south of this point requires proper forms and in some cases clearance from the dispatcher. The sign also marks the beginning of the speed limit for the Thendara station area.

Description:  Into the curve. On the left is the storage yard for various pieces of railroad equipment owned by New York State as part of the Railroad Corridor. Mountains of spikes, tie plates, joint bars, rail, culverts and sign posts are stored here for future re-use. Notable new additions are the signal boxes and crossing gates removed from the Tupper Lake to Lake Placid section of the line, which the state foolishly decided to remove in favor of a rail trail.

Title:  Storage Yard
Description:  Piles of signals and gates are stored to the left. Some of these will be reused on the Big Moose to Tupper Lake section of the line that is currently being rehabbed. The rest will continue to be stored.

Description:  Rounding the curve the yard comes into view. To the left, behind the tow behind compressor, is a pile of prefabricated wooden grade crossings. These will be used to rebuild most of the private or unpaved crossings on the line and will be installed this year. Behind that is the locked gate that prevents anyone from driving into the storage yard or to Lock & Dam

Description:  The Thendara Yard. The south switch for the west passing siding is in the center of frame, while the stub siding that once served a lumber yard now holds camp cars. Past that is the switch to the engine house that is attached to the freight house. This is approximately where the switch from the Old Forge branch once diverged..

NYC 8255
Title:  NYC 8255
Description:  A group of Adirondack workers were bringing out the railroad's very popular rail bikes from winter storage in preparation for the season starting in a few weeks. The engine house was started by the Adirondack Railway in 1980 but was not finished when the railroad shut down. It was extended and completed by the Adirondack Centennial Railroad in 1992.

ADIX 1835
Title:  ADIX 1835
Description:  Looking south from the crossing in the middle of the yard. You may notice a rail out of alignment in front of the 705. This was a strange requirement of the FRA to allow the railbikes to operate from the siding closest to the station. It effectively made the siding "out of service" allowing the railbikes to occupy the track.
