Elegant entrance
Title:  Elegant entrance
Description:  The Missouri Pacific had a large office and freight house at Coffeyville, which was a much bigger place on the Mopac at the time of its construction than it is now. The town is now served by only one MP line, now the UP Coffeyville Sub, with short line South Kansas & Oklahoma working the remaining lines, including any remnants of the Santa Fe and MKT, which also came here.

KCS station
Title:  KCS station
Description:  Ths KCS station at Stilwell was built in 1907 and is now home to the local historical group. Its easy to find, as it is not only in its obvious place adjacent to the tracks, but also next to US 59, where I was standing to take this photo. Good action here, its at the south end of the siding, and theres parking.

Title:  ATSF station
Description:  The Santa Fe had some substantial stations in town that you would not think would merit them. This station here at Medicine Lodge was big, considering the size of the town. Its still here, and in use.

Modern look
Title:  Modern look
Description:  In the 1950s, some railroads replaced older stations, perhaps in the hope that a newer facility would attract more ridership, though some older stations were just aging and needed replacement. One such place, then a division point on the MP line to Pueblo, was Hoisington Kan. This mid century modern structure still stands at the edge of downtown, and is used by Watcos Kansas & Oklahoma, which operates a variety of cast off Santa Fe and MP lines in Kansas and Oklahoma.

Old station where I didnt expect one
Title:  Old station where I didnt expect one
Description:  We were on our way to my wifes family in Georgia, and stopped at the Russell Cave NM, just down the road and across the state line in Alabama. I was looking for a short cut back out to US 72, and wandered into Orme. Lo and behold, theres a station there. Apparently this was once(100 years ago) a big enough coal producing area that there was a railroad here. Im guessing it connected with the Southern, which passes a few miles away, along US 72. This is the east side of the station.

It will be here forever
Title:  It will be here forever
Description:  The 1928 built coaling tower standing astride the ATSF, now Watco K&O line, is still standing, a tribute to its sturdy construction. Many of these towers remain because they are too expensive to tear down, having been built of reinforced concrete in an era when things were built to last an eternity.

Title:  ATSF station, now a Legion hall
Description:  The former ATSF station, quite large for the size of the town its in, now is the American Legion hall here. There is also a monument to the fallen residents of Ellinwood at the east end of the parking lot. We are grateful for their service, especially for those who gave all in that effort.

UP station
Title:  UP station
Description:  I was driving around Hastings looking for a place to eat, when I crossed over what looked like an abandoned right of way in town. Maps I had looked at showed the UP Marysville Sub going through town, but the line I saw bypassed it to the east, crossing over the BNSF ex Q main on a bridge. I followed the line a couple of blocks and came across this magnificent building, once along the UP, now on a bike path. Im often dubious about removing rail lines in favor of trails, but in this case, it was a good idea. Passenger trains on the UP here gave up long ago, and Im sure the locals appreciate not having the numerous trains, may of them coal, not rolling past their homes.

Title:  Tall tower
Description:  The bridge over the Tennessee River at Decatur AL is a lift span, needed to allow barge tows on the river to move through the area. This view is from the pedestrian overpass just to the south of the span, a great place for catching action coming off the bridge, which can be 50 moves on some days.

KCS bridge
Title:  KCS bridge
Description:  A fairly typical structure for the KCS is this part deck girder, part through truss bridge over Baron Creek. There is one similar to it over the Illinois River 15 miles to the north at Watts. I cant figure out why they would build a bridge that is part truss, part deck, and not one type all the way across.

Illinois River bridge
Title:  Illinois River bridge
Description:  This is the KCS bridge over the Illinois River just north of Watts. Its an easy shot from the adjacent US 59 bridge, as I have done here. During the record flooding of May 2017, water was up to the bottom beam, and about 1/2 mile of track was washed out. On a quiet night, I can hear northbound trains working into Siloam Springs as they come off the bridge, which is about six miles from my house.

Frisco station
Title:  Frisco station
Description:  The Arkansas & Missouri took over the Frisco 6th Sub from Monett South to Ft Smith, and got a short branch to Bentonville in the deal. The line was intact as far as the east edge of town til about a year ago, when they started taking up the track west of Dixieland Rd, where they serve the Glad Bag plant. Dont know how long the tracks have been gone from the station, but long enough that theres not much evidence left. The station, however, looks good.

Where the freight comes from
Title:  Where the freight comes from
Description:  At one time, McGehee was a big place on the Missouri Pacific, with lines going in several directions from the Little Rock-Alexandria LA main. One of them went out to the Mississippi River, another south to Tallulah LA, on which this rice elevator is located. It appears there was once a siding to the right of the building. The line is now run by the North Louisiana & Arkansas, which sometimes stations a switcher here.

MKT station
Title:  MKT station
Description:  This station is not in its original location. The tracks are on the west side of US 69, where Im waiting at the light. The station was once over near the tracks. MKT wanted to tear it down, but Wagoner wanted it as a part of its history, so it was moved to the opposite side of the highway. It's looking a little worse for wear nowadays. There is a caboose and a coach beyond, out of this photo, as well here.

Former Missouri & North Arkansas
Title:  Former Missouri & North Arkansas
Description:  This station has had several owners over the years. It was originally built for the Missouri & North Arkansas, which connected with the Frisco at Seligman MO, and is not related to the road of the same name existing today. It later came into the Missouri Pacific camp, before being largely abandoned in the mid 20th century. A short segment survives in Eureka Springs as the base for a tourist train, which uses it as a base of operations.

Grand Rapids & Indiana station
Title:  Grand Rapids & Indiana station
Description:  GR&I was a Pennsy subsidiary that ran from Richmond, Indiana up through Fort Wayne to Grand Rapids, and eventually to the Strait of Mackinac. It had a seasonal passenger traffic flow, as people would vacation in the northern part of Michigans lower peninsula. Now its mostly abandoned, and a bike/snowmobile trail. See the photo in this album of the bridge and trail from Stanwood Mich. This was Decaturs other station, the main one being the now gone Erie station, which was on their Jersey City-Chicago main, a line now long gone, though a small portion of it still exists here as a switching lead.

This is the GR&I in Michigan, where it has a much different character than in the more industrial environs of northern Indiana. Title:  Austin & Northwestern station
Description:  This "station" is a revival of a one time station that existed in the town. The original station was built in 1892 to serve the Austin & Northwestern RR, which has the distinction of carrying the granite used to construct the state capitol building in Austin. It burned in 1961. The current building houses the local visitor center, and was built in 2006.

Title:  Hasnt been a train here for a while
Description:  While on my way up to Quivira NWR, I drove through Pratt, something I had done many times before, but either on K 61 or US 54/400. I had not, til now, come up US 281 from Oklahoma. I had always thought of Pratt as a Rock Island town, which it is. I had no idea there was a Santa Fe station there, too. The building is in good shape, and is currently occupied by a couple of non rail businesses. The track, on the other hand, looks like its not see action in quite some time.
