Album Info:I like shortlines the best, and years ago I started keeping a list of all the ones I hit. This album is intended to be the picture record of ly baglist. I'm picking the one picture that epitomizes each line, as far as I'm concerned. I owe a lot of this to G.M. McDonald's publication "The Short Line". In pre-internet days, TSL is how I found many a shortline. Months & year are good, day is usually approximate, and not all pictures are up to standards-fair warning.

Cadillac & Lake City-Denver Division (CLK)
Title:  Cadillac & Lake City-Denver Division (CLK)
Description:  The Cadillac & Lake City also ran an ex-RI operation in Denver. I shot their 44 tonner on a foggy day with film that couldn't handle it. Still, I haven't seen other shots of the operation, so I'm including it. I believe this line is run by Denver & Rock Island now.

Keota-Washington Transportation Company (KWTC)
Title:  Keota-Washington Transportation Company (KWTC)
Description:  The KWTC story is pretty strange. They started running the ex RI Keota-Washington branch in eastern Iowa (hence the name), but gave it up after a few months. They then relocated to the RI Iowa Falls- Vinton branch in late 1981. They bought 2 'church organ' Baldwin VO1000s from the Pacific Lumber Company (#104 & 105). 105 came in unservicable, and 104 made a couple of trips, then burned a traction motor. After that came these 2 Geeps. They hauled grain from a single elevator at Wellsburg, in either 40 foot box cars (like the one on the interchange track behind the units), or covered hoppers if they could get them. When I shot this in 1982, KWTC was running only when the elevator had sufficient loads (not often). Not too long after, the RI trustee pulled the plug on them, and KWTC quit running. The Baldwins were scrapped, and the Geeps went on to other employment.

Belton Railroad (BRR)
Title:  Belton Railroad (BRR)
Description:  I held off adding this picture, which is best of the worst for the Belton visit, for many years. Terrible picture, granted. However, the filing with the STB this week announcing the formal abandonment of what was the BRR made me decide to share this bad with the world. The BRR was a former Katy branch formed to preserve rail service in 1960. They trundled along for years moving cement, rock, and lumber behind this SW1 (and later a SW1200 off the Katy). In 1991, the line's owner sold BRR to the Georgetown RR, who operated it on and off. When abandonment was finally filed in 2020, there hadn't been a train in over 20 years.

Johnson County Industrial Rwy
Title:  Johnson County Industrial Rwy
Description:  Johnson County Industrial back in the GE days. There was something right behind me that precluded a better shot, but don't remember what. JCI isn’t a common carrier, but rather a contract carrier. What’s the difference? A contract carrier hasn’t filed with STB to obtain common carrier authority over their track. Otherwise, they are effectively a shortline, even soliciting their own traffic and serving multiple industries. The STB considers them an industrial operation, but to the FRA they are a full-fledged railroad that has to meet all safety and reporting requirements.

Title:  Kewash RR (KEWH)

Mineral Wells & Eastern (MWRY)
Title:  Mineral Wells & Eastern (MWRY)
Description:  This is a full-fledged 'death of a railroad' picture. I hit MW&E in late 1992, while on my way to look at the Texas Central. I spent an inordinate amount of time looking for their GP30 #701-literally going over very inch of railroad. This caboose was all I found. Later I found out they had sold the 701 in order to generate some cash to keep going, and were trip-leasing UP power whenever they had cars to move (not often). They were actually in the middle of abandonment proceedings when I took this picture. So this anonymous ex Mopac caboose was actually the last 'active' piece of the MW&E on the eve of abandonment.

Wyoming-Colorado (WYCO)- Encampment Div
Title:  Wyoming-Colorado (WYCO)- Encampment Div
Description:  WYCO had a separate division located over the Snowy Mountain range from their better-known line in Laramie. This line hauled mostly woodchips from Saratoga to the UP connection in Walcott. On this day they had Southwestern geep 2072 as power (both lines were owned by the same company, Western RR Builders). After years of hauling low volumes of low tariff traffic, they finally gave up and pulled the track. A siding at Walcott now serves transloading what came up the WYCO.

East Texas Central (ETC)
Title:  East Texas Central (ETC)
Description:  When I was there, the CALM had stopped operating the line, and the East Texas Central was running trains. So said the train crew when I asked for permission to be on-site. The CALM still existed, but was subleasing to ETC or something like that. On Sunday, this train was arriving from the northern end of the line with carloads of roofing granules.
