Album Info:Oshkosh, WI used to have a maze of rails serving heavy industry ranging from lumber saw mills to heavy trucks. The industrial base of Oshkosh has shrunk dramatically over the past twenty years. Morgan, Buckstaff, Paine Lumber, Leach Co. and many other rail served businesses are now gone. Some that remain, no longer have rail revice. A 1978 Milwaukee Road list of switched industries shows 45 customers. In 2014 there are 15, on two seperate lines that no longer connect. The line east of U.S. 41 is a combination of former Soo Line and CNW track. The line west of U.S. 41 is on the former Milwauuke Road right of way that at one time ran into Oshkosh and connected with the Soo near the Fox River. The Milwaukee had yard and engine facilities near the Fox River. Most of the old rail is now gone. This album is to record what remains for rail traffic in Oshkosh and what changes are made in the future.

Description:  Looking into Oshkosh from the South Oakwood Road grade crossing along the Wisconsin and Southern. The line is former Milwaukee Road from Horicon to Oshkosh. Visible in the photo are WOW Logistics to the right and Lapham-Hickey Steel to the left. Both are rail customers. Over the crest of the hill, the rail ends at a loading ramp for loading Oshkosh Corporation vehicles and Bemis has a large operation on this side of town also. The Bemis facility has a trailing point spur for trains headed toward Oshkosh, these turnouts would be facing.

Title:  WOW Warehouse / Parker Building Oshkosh, WI
Description:  The WOW warehouse spur located in the southwest industrial park of Oshkosh comes off the former Milwaukee Road Twelfth Subdivision (WSOR 's Oshkosh Sub) line fom Horicon to Milwaukee. This facility was an 80,000 square foot facility when WOW Logistics bought it and it has grown to be 475,000 square feet. The engineering firm Parker uses office space here also and perhaps does some manufacturing. Menasha Corporation used this building in it's earlier years making cartons. This particular spur seems to get used mainly for staging cars to be swapped at the ramp at the end of track about a half mile away over the hill.

Lapham-Hickey Steel at Oshkosh
Title:  Lapham-Hickey Steel at Oshkosh
Description:  Lapham-Hickey Steel opened this facility in 1989, moving to Oshkosh from Neenah. Lapham-Hickey's presence has grown in Oshkosh over the years. From my observation of the rail traffic on this subdivision of the Wisconsin and Southern, it seems that Lapham-Hickey receives mainly steel plate via rail. I have never seen any loads of structural or tubing heading this way on the WSOR.

Description:  The former Milwaukee Road Line into Oshkosh used to run all the way to the industrial area of the Fox River. The line now ends about a mile and a half short of the Fox River, on the west side of U.S. 41 at this circus style ramp for loading Oshkosh Corporation vehicles onto flat cars.

Description:  The former Milwaukee Road line into Oshkosh now ends far short of it's original terminal at this circus style loading ramp. The ramp is used to load Oshkosh Corporation vehicles for shipment. A nice sized cut of cars is spotted and waiting for the next loadout.

Description:  A closer look at the walkway in place along the spur used for loading Oshkosh Corporation vehicles. This circus style loading ramp marks what is now the end of the former Milwaukee Road line into Oshkosh. Most of what the Milwaukee used to serve in Oshkosh is now gone. The last remaining former customer on the Milwaukee Road side of the river, in the old industrial district; the City of Oshkosh shops, is currently under renovations too. (2014)

Former Soo Yard
Title:  Former Soo Yard
Description:  A view looking railroad "west" along the former Soo Line R.o.W. from Hughes Street. Hughes Street crossed the rails via an overpass until sometime in the late 1990's or early 2000's. This is now just an at grade crossing, and the line is nowhere near as busy. This piece of former mainline through Wisconsin for the Soo and the Wisconsin Central is now the end of a branch with a few customers. This former Soo yard is now a rail load facility for the CN and Oshkosh Corporation, though not much ships from here.

Description:  A view of the rail load facility at the former Soo Line yard in Oshkosh. Look close and it appears there may be a track scale back there. This CN facility doesn't seem to get much use compared to the WSOR facility.

Hydrite
Title:  Hydrite
Description:  The Hydrite Company was created in 1929 in Milwaukee as a tannery. Following the depression and WWII, the owners decided to go with a product less susceptable to depression and went with chlorine due to its use as a sanitizer. Over the years the company grew and expanded it's services. Hydrite is now in numerous states and a major supplier of industrial chemicals serving many industries. The Oshkosh plant was built in 1981 on Oregon Street and has spots for multiple tank cars. The plant is located on the former Soo Line right of way and still going strong in 2014. The name Hydrite came from a fanciful combination of the words hide and right as the original tanning company claimed to make your hide (hyde) turn out right.

Description:  A view from the turnout at Hydrite along the former Soo Line right of way. Once on a mainline between Fond du Lac and Stevens Point, the line is now a branch from Black Wolf and ends in this industrial area, with a few fewer customers and less track than even a decade ago.

Description:  Bemis Performance Packaging on Moser Street on the north side of Oshkosh. The facility is one of the more recent additions to the Oshkosh industrial scene. It was originally built as Banner Packaging and acquired by the giant Bemis in 1995. They receive multiple carloads of plastic pellets by rail, and ship by truck. This view looks southwest and shows the former Soo Line main on the left. The CNW was further to the left on the other side of the line poles. Another plastics packaging firm is along the line curving off to the right.

Description:  The former Soo Line main between Fond du Lac and Neenah is on the left and the northern most Oshkosh industrial spur is on the right. The factory is Bemis Performance (former Banner Packaging). The spur serves one more factory which is also a plastics packaging firm that does mainly contract work for Bemis, about 200 yards further up the spur.

Pluswood and Oshkosh Cold Storage.
Title:  Pluswood and Oshkosh Cold Storage.
Description:  Two boxcars are spotted at Pluswood, a division of Panolam Industries. Pluswood is a rather large complex with multiple car spots. It doesn't seem to be as busy there as it could be, however, at least they still get switched often enough to keep the line open. Oshkosh Cold Storage, to the left, also has a spur off this line. I have not seen a car spotted there. This industrial spur branches off the former CNW line that ran thru Oshkosh (now CN) and looped around the industrial north side of town. The track then came to a wye near Lake Buttes des Morts where it connected with an industrial spur along the shoreline and continued on to Hortonville and beyond. this track is what crossed the Soo at what is still Medina Junction. This track in the photo now ends about a quarter mile behind the camera and the former right of way to Hortonville is the Wiowash recreational trail. Pluswood and Cold Storage are the last two customers on this once very busy spur. There is yet one more between this point and the connction to the mainline.

Blended Waxes
Title:  Blended Waxes
Description:  Blended Waxes was started on 1 May 1976 by Clarence Gereau to produce cheese waxes and hot melt adhesives. In the 1980's, Blended Waxes expanded their custom wax blending operations to include wax emulsions and synthetic lubricants. Blended Waxes is recognized as a full service custom blend and contract manufacturer. They also have some interesting items for the general public in their online retail store. Blended Waxes has been at this Oshkosh location since it's inception. Over the years the company has been progressive in remaining state of the art and it shows with their unloading facilities. This view shows the tank car unloading spur.

Description:  A stack train passes the Blended Waxes car spots as it heads compass north (railroad west ). The head end of the train is entering the south end of the former C&NW yard and will soon be crossing the Fox River on the old swing bridge. The swing bridge has been replaced with a modern, quick operating, bascule.

PACUR
Title:  PACUR
Description:  PACUR is located across Moser Street from Bemis Performance Package. It was started by Bemis CEO Howard Curler and is ran by his son in law Sen. Ron Johnson. The location worked nicely because of proximity to the rail line serving Bemis Performance (former Banner Packaging). With the help of Chamco, a business development group in Oshkosh funded both publicly and privately, the spur was extended to serve this location. PACUR receives a good number of plastics carloads.

Description:  PACUR is located across Moser Street from the Bemis Performance Package facility. Started by the Bemis CEO, PACUR does most of it's work for Bemis and it's subsidiaries. PACUR is a solid rail customer, receiving loads of plastic pellets. If PACUR ships by rail, it must be transloaded elsewhere, or shipped intermodally, there is no facility at the plant to ship out by rail.

Description:  A view from near the Moser Street grade crossing looking back down the industrial spur toward the main line. This side of Bemis Performance (former Banner Packaging) is fairly interesting to view. The spur continues off the foreground behind the photographer location to Pacur. Pacur is another manufacturer of plastic packaging materials.

Signals at Snell Road
Title:  Signals at Snell Road
Description:  Looking back toward the CN main along the industrial spur that serves Bemis Performance and Pacur. The main line is former original Wisconsin Central, then Soo Line to the modern incarnation of the WC to Candian National. The CNW main was parallel to the right of the main still present, now covered with brush and trees. It would make a great trail connecting Oshkosh and Neenah giving some nice views of the active rail.

Description:  One of the two tracks for rail service at Pluswood. The view looks generally west toward Vinland Street. This factory was obviously set up to handle a plethora of rail traffic, but in recent years, there are often time with nothing spotted here. On some occassions, there may be two cars spotted on the far track. They are still in operation making laminate panels for Panolam, the corporate parent.

Pluswood

Description:  A view of the west end of the north side of Pluswood. This shows one of the two spurs serving the factory, both on the north side of the facility. the foreground track was part of the CNW system that looped around the north side of Oshkosh and also branched off toward Hortonville and New London until it was truncated at the wye near Lake Butte des Morts sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's. It was further truncated in the 1990's with the purchase of CNW's replacement in the area, FRV by the WC. The WC eliminated the wye and cut the rails short of what was then HWY 110 (now 45) and eliminated all the track heading back into Oshkosh along the shorline of the lake/river. That portion of track had become idle due to customer base changes in shipping/receiving.

Oshkosh Cold Storage
Title:  Oshkosh Cold Storage
Description:  Also located on the former CNW right of way serving as an industrial spur on the north side of Oshkosh is Oshkosh Cold Storage. This facility is located directly across the main spur from Pluswood. There are a couple doors where a car can be spotted here and a close look between the barricade barrel and the stairway shows a wheel stop on the rail. I have never seen a car spotted here. Perhaps some one else has a photo or two of the spur in use.

Description:  Another shot of the silos and unloading area at Bemis Performance. The view is from between the main and the spur. The unloading tracks come off the spur which continues curving to right between the trees and the building to PACUR, which is a quasi- Bemis subsidiary.

Description:  The WSOR switches the Bemis plant in the Oshkosh Southwest Industrial Park. The job comes out of Horicon on former Milwaukee Road tracks. Since WATCO took over the WSOR, the locomotives don't seem to be kept as clean as the old ownership had allowed.

WSOR Oshkosh Terminal
Title:  WSOR Oshkosh Terminal
Description:  This facility at the intersection of State Highway 91 and Clairville Road includes a large grain elevator that gets plenty of business. Also at this site, is a load out for ethanol tanks. The ethanol plant is located about a mile off the line up State 91. The ethanol is brought to the storage tanks here via a pipe line. This location also had a circus style flat car loading ramp for trailers and Oshkosh truck vehicles. Since ADM took over this site, one can't really investigate to see if it is still there. Oshkosh loads it's trucks further into Oshkosh now, at a new facility at the end of this branch. In the early 1990's, WSOR attempted to develop piggy back service at this location, even renting a "piggy-packer" to load trailers, but the service never took off. Coal also was trans loaded here into the 1990's from rail to trucks. One other spur goes off opposite the elevator to what appears to have been some form of concrete construction company, which has been long since closed. Beyond this complex, further into Oshkosh, the WSOR has a nice sized customer base.

Noffke Lumber
Title:  Noffke Lumber
Description:  Located at MP 175, the CN has a spur to serve Noffke Lumber. Noffke is located on what was the southern end of the CF Interlocking controlled by CF Tower at the crossing of the Soo by the CNW to serve it's north Oshkosh industrial spur which now ends at Pluswood. There was a nice long siding here as well as numerous spurs into a variety of industries. Noffke's is the only remaining spur. It is not an uncommon sight to see a bulkhead flat spotted here. Noffke Lumber began as a coal dealer known as Noffke Fuel, sometime before the depression. The business did well and had three dealerships in different cities, one of which seems to have been Appleton, WI. The founder of the business decided to focus on the most successful one of the three and sold off the two not in Oshkosh. The coal business did fairly well, but as coal stoves in homes began to decline, the decision was made to switch to lumber dealing. This turned out to be a great decision as it was made just in time to catch the post Wold War II building boom. Noffke Lumber had a yard in Menasha, which is now closed, and still has a yard in Waupaca. They also have a nice catch phrase, "A yard of good lumber".

Block Iron scrap yard
Title:  Block Iron scrap yard
Description:  Sadoff and Rudoy own the Block Iron scrap yard. Sadoff is a major player in scrap metals in Wisconsin. This location on East 10th Avenue has a rail spur that has not been used for at least 22 years. The spur is off the former CNW line thru Oshkosh and this area was abundant with industry, now being redeveloped as the piles of gravel attest to. The gravel is the remains of brick and masonry. Along with the changing times, Block Iron no longer accepts scrap at this yard. Twenty two years ago, it was a beehive of activity with large piles of iron, Sadoff trucks and citizens recycling their metals for a small profit.

Pluswood
Title:  Pluswood
Description:  A view looking at the Vinland grade crossing and turnout to the western spur into Pluswood. The industrial spur ends about a quarter mile from the camera into the distance. There is a runaround track on the opposite side of the grade crossing. Pluswood does receive rail service yet in 2014, though nowhere near the volume that the facility was built to handle. There is usually only an occasional boxcar or two spotted here, the most usual being none.

Changes Made at the Former Soo Line Oshkosh yard
Title:  Changes Made at the Former Soo Line Oshkosh yard
Description:  The former Soo yard, just south of 20th Ave. has not been used for much over the last five to ten years. Cars can sometimes be seen here in storage, but not often. Cars spotted here are usually off spot for a local customer, it would seem. There is a circus style rail load ramp, note the safety yellow painted walkway which would be located between the two rail load tracks. One of the tracks has been pulled, along with the ties sometime in 2015. This ramp has not been used for many years as Oshkosh Corp. ships rail loaded vehicles via the WSOR about two miles to the west of this location. Unless things change with Oshkosh Corp. or a new customer comes on line, it seems that the rail here will be pulled entirely over the next few years. Rail traffic may have picked up through Oshkosh since the days of the Soo Line, C&NW and Milwaukee Road, but local traffic has somewhat declined. There have been many closures of rail served businesses since the 1980's in this area.

Description:  With the removal of the old Chicago and Northwestern yard in Oshkosh, the CN now stores the cars that would have been in the yard on the end of it's north Oshkosh industrial spur. This line once ran through Medina Junction on it's way to Hortonville and beyond. These cars will most likely be going to one of the two plastics/packaging businesses located on the CN in Oshkosh. Bemis Performance Packaging, or it's partner in outsourcing, Pacur.
