Description:  A dramatic plume of black smoke signals the startup of this Alco-Schenectady 4-6-6-4 Challenger. Built in August of 1944 as UP #3944, renumbered to 3707 in October 1952 when converted from coal to oil fuel, retired in June 1961, Arthur Stensvad photo.

Description:  This rugged brute sits quietly in the North Platte, NE, yard. Built by Alco-Schenectady in August of 1937 as UP 3935 (serial #68944), it was converted to burn oil and renumbered in April of 1944 to 3835. Built by Alco-Schenectady in June of 1943 (serial #70180), it's massive tractive effort of 97,352 lb helped move freight over the mountainous Western ranges until being "vacated" in June of 1961.
