NYC Budd 67
Description:
NYC Budd 67 on the rear of CB&Q Train #22, the Morning Twin Cities Zephyr, at Aurora, Illinois on July 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I have very limited information about this car and the reason it's on the Zephyr. This car was built as NYC Number 67 as a Parlor-Observation between April-June 1948 by Budd and appeared for about a month or so during the summer of 1965 in this position. It appears that the NYC trains the Twilight Limited (#'s 30-31), the Chicago Mercury (#'s 375-376), and the Cleveland Mercury (#'s 75-76) were assigned Budd Parlor-Observation cars in the 58-70 number range in the 1950's. One record show this car was retired by the NYC in October 1965 and sold to Ringling Brothers Circus.

NYC R-2 318
Description:
New York Central Class R-2 318 at Michigan City, Indiana on February 16, 1964, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Number 342 was built by Alco-GE in February 1931 for the NYC as number 1218 ( GE c/n 11169 - Alco c/n 68246 ), renumbered to 318 in August 1936, sold to the CSS&SB for parts in 1955. In 1955, ten R-2 Motors were sold to the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad to supplement their electrified freight operations. Seven units, CSS&SB ( 701-707 ) were rebuilt to use 1500 V DC overhead lines using parts left over from the conversion of the P-Motors to 660 V DC third rail. The front ends were also modified moving the cab door from the front to a more typical side access.

NYC SW1 618
Description:
NYC SW1 618, Chicago, Illinois, May 9, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Admittedly a bad photo, but it's all I have. The NYC had two SW1's numbered 618, the first was built in 1942. This one has a single taper from the hood to the cab, rectangular cab windows, and a twin sealed beam headlight, indicating that it is a late model (Phase II) SW1. That being the case, this locomotive was built in June 1950 (c/n 11785) on EMD Order 6116, was renumbered NYC 8444, then became PC 8444, and later became CR 8444. It was traded to EMD.

NYC E7 4011 at LaSalle Street Station, Chicago, Illinois, October 31, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in April 1947 (c/n 4166) on EMD Order E751A, and became PC 4011. Given the long shadows, according to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide, this train could be either: Train #28, the New England States, or Train #2, The Pacemaker, (both were scheduled to leave LaSalle Street at 3:00 PM CST), or perhaps Train #26, the Twentieth Century Limited, scheduled to leave at 3:30 PM CST, or Train #304, The James Whitcomb Riley, scheduled to leave at 4:00 PM CST, or Train #356, The Twilight Limited, scheduled to leave at 4:15 CST. I failed to note which train on the slide.

Description:
NYC GP7 5746, Chicago, Illinois, March 7, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1953 (c/n 18450) on EMD Order 5183, it was apparently built with a steam generator, since removed, according to a note in the book, Diesel Locomotive Rosters, The Railroad Magazine Series. The NYC class changed from DRSP-4n to DRS-4n as a result of the generator removal. It retained its NYC road number when it went from NYC to PC to CR. It was scrapped by CR at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. It is seen here heading east on CB&Q tracks, having left the Q's Cicero Yard which is just beyond the bridges in the background. It appears this locomotive has been named.

NYC A-3174 6210
Description:
New York Central Lima-Hamilton A-3174 #6210, Englewood, Chicago, Illinois, March 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Lima-Hamilton did not have model numbers for their diesel-electric locomotives, but used a specification number, in this case, A-3174. This locomotive was built as #5810 in September 1950 (c/n 9433) on order #1217-DE, that order placed on February 6, 1950. It was one of 16 of this model built by L-H for the NYC, ordered to replace steam power on the NYC's suburban operations in the New York City area. The NYC's 16 A-3174 road switchers may have been the only copies ever built. It appears to have been modified by NYC, the two diesel exhaust stacks are not L-H issue. As built, this locomotive had a single exhaust stack similar to an Alco RS3. I might speculate that it may have been re-powered with an EMD prime mover. On August 4, 1950, Baldwin announced publicly that it was conducting merger talks with Lima-Hamilton, and on the last day of November 1950, Baldwin and L-H became Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation, and with that, the L-H locomotive Division became an endangered species. The task at hand was to complete the orders on the books, and convert L-H's operations to manufacture power shovels and cranes. The final locomotive built by L-H was a 2500 hp center cab transfer locomotive for the PRR (#5683), completed September 11, 1951, and with that, the final tally was 174 diesel-electric locomotives (all models) constructed by the Lima-Hamilton Corporation.

NYC A-3174 6210
Description:
New York Central Lima-Hamilton A-3174 6210, Englewood, Chicago, Illinois, March 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built on order #1217-DE (order placed February 6, 1950), construction #'s 9423-9438, for 16 1200 hp road switchers, delivered as #5800-5815. Numbers 5800-5801 built August 1950, #'s 5802-5811 built September 1950, 5812-5815 built October 1950. The units weighed 247,500 lbs. I also found a reference to re-numbering in a book entitled, "Railroad Locomotive Rosters", stating that the 5800-5815 series was re-numbered 6200-6215, classed as DRSP-5a, and that #'s 6200-6204, 6206-6209, 6212-6215 had steam generators removed and re-classed DRS-5a, T.E. 60,200, weight 240,800. In looking at photos of similar models from Lima-Hamilton, they have a single rectangular exhaust stack, oriented lengthwise on the hood, located forward near the radiator. This exhaust arrangement is not Lima-Hamilton, and I cannot find reference to an EMD re-engine job at Andre's Serial number site, so perhaps this is a re-engine job by the NYC.

NYC @-3174 6210
Description:
New York Central Lima-Hamilton A-3174 #6210, built September 1950 (c/n 9433) at Englewood, Chicago, Illinois, March 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Lima-Hamilton did not have diesel locomotive model numbers, using instead a specification number, in this case A-3174. The specifications for this model were: a Hamilton Model T-89-SA four cycle 1200 horsepower turbocharged eight cylinder diesel prime mover, coupled to a Westinghouse 499A main generator powering four 362D traction motors. The electrical equipment was supplied by Westinghouse. The trucks were General Steel Castings Type B Swing Bolster with 40 inch wheels geared for 60 mph. It carried 800 gallons of fuel, 40 cubic feet of sand, 145 gallons of lube oil, 225 gallons of engine cooling water, and 800 gallons of water for the steam generator, which produced 1600 pounds of steam per hour. They weighed 247,500 pounds as built. According to tVe book, "Diesel Locomotive Rosters", The Railroad Magazine Series, 16 oa this model were built for the NYC as #5800-5815, renumbered 6200-6215, classed as DRSP-5a on the NYC. However, #'q 6200-6204, 6206-6209, 6212-6215 had the steam generators removed, were re-classed as DRS-5a, and thus weighed 240,800 pounds, and produced 60,200 pounds of tractive effort. As far as I can tell, these were the only examples of the A-3174 built by L-H.

CRI A-3170 8410
Description:
Chicago River & Indiana Railroad (CR&I) Lima-Hamilton (L-H) A-3170 #8410, built May 1951 (c/n 9496), Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. As far as I can tell, L-H did not have model numbers for their diesel-electric locomotives, but used a specification number. Some references make use of a LS-1200 model, but I believe this is might be diesel spotters handiwork. The CR&I was a subsidiary of the New York Central, and 8410 is seen in the Chicago Junction (CJ) Yard, a railroad company leased by the NYC for 99 years starting in 1922, the same year the NYC purchased the CR&I. Both the CR&I and the CJ were switching railroads and effectively controlled access to the Chicago Stockyards. The CR&I had the distinction of being the world's only all Lima-Hamilton powered railroad when the NYC replaced the steam power with diesel. Starting in 1949, the NYC placed an order for six 1000 hp switchers (#'s 8400-8405) of similar design (A-3170, the specification number did not change when the horsepower was increased to 1200). Following the merger of Baldwin and L-H in November 1950, the NYC placed another order for ten 800 hp switchers (spec. # A-3171, CR&I road #'s 9800-9809), and in May 1951 ordered (L-H order # 1219-DE) six 1200 hp A-3170 switchers, CR&I #'s 8406-8411. The 1200 hp A-3170 weighed between 120-125 tons, was powered by a 8 cylinder inline turbocharged Hamilton T89SA diesel driving a Westinghouse 499A main generator, with four 362D traction motors. It was classed as DES-15b by the NYC. The #8839 to the right was an Indiana Harbor Belt (another NYC subsidiary) SW-7, built January 1950 (c/n 8130), became CR&I 8839 during January 1965, became PC 8839 February 1968, and became CR 8867 April 1976.

This is one of 209 cars in the 87455-87699 number series listed in the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER).
