Kepner and the conductor is Mr. W.L. Walzer. They're on Train #29, the Chicago-bound "Broadway Limited" that's about to depart from Pennsylvania Station in New York City. The locomotive is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4829, a GG-1 (2-C-C--2) built in Juniata during June of 1935, rated at 4,620 horsepower, and retired in April of 1968 after 33 years of faithful service. Here is page one of a five-page article by Al Rung entitled "Christmas Eve on the Broadway." It was published originally in the December 1948 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 26. Photo Caption: "Engineer W.J. Kepner, up in the cab of the GG-1 electric, compares his watch with Conductor W.L. Walzer of the Broadway Limited. A minute or so after this required safety ritual, the most famous passenger train on the Pennsylvania Railroad will begin its 16-hour journey to Chicago." Here is the 30th of 33 color prints of calendar art works that were commissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1925 through 1958. Shown here is Grif Teller's painting entitled "Mass Transportation." It was published originally in 1955. Depicted here are no fewer than a dozen Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric locomotives rated at 4,620 horsepower each. In the foreground is PRR engine #4814 that was built by General Electric in August of 1935 and retired in May of 1967. Also depicted is PRR engine #4829 built in Juniata in June of 1935 and retired in July of 1969. In this context, they're all supporting the annual Army-Navy Football Game. |
